I dunno. I've always thought the chain-chomps looked and sounded like automatons. Listen to when they bark in SM64 and SM64DS, you can specifically here some metal parts clanking together. I dunno if that's just supposed to her their chains rattling or something, but it sure sounds like the turning of gears to me.

They bark in M64, Yoshi's Island, MK64, and they don't sound metallic at all.
But, their hovering chain suggests that their is some metalic elements in the skin, making the chain magnetic.
Their teeth might also be composed of an alloy.

Listen closely to the bark; when they do it you can hear metal clanking in the background.

I agree with the Chomps having a metallic exoskeleton. Let me scrounge up a quote from Paper Mario:The Red Chomps from PM:TTYD could be a subspecies. Can't give my opinion on SMS Chomps because I've never played the game. So it looks (to me) that they have exoskeletons.
Then again...there are Stone Chomps in PM...

You're right, there were Stone Chomps in PM. That makes me even more convinced that they're automatons.

I just had a thought about how Chain Chomps moved around. Maybe their body contains that same mineral/alloy/whatever that floating objects like coins do. If so, they may be able to manipulate themselves by shifting the mineral/alloy/whatever.

The little chomps in SMS are supossedly on fire because the have a fever. And if I recall correctly, the big one was just really angry...or was it hot...I can't remember. ----- On thing should be noted: even though the SMS chomps could be considered "fire chomps" the lack the ability to fly as the ones in SMB3 do.

I just had a thought about how Chain Chomps moved around. Maybe their body contains that same mineral/alloy/whatever that floating objects like coins do. If so, they may be able to manipulate themselves by shifting the mineral/alloy/whatever. That might explain whay Shark chomps can somehow seem to be able to fly. I think it has more to do with wht they eat. So alot of the chomps seem to like eating earth so the more of the mineral they happen to eat the higher the'll be able to jump or something. To be able to fly they must have to eat alot of the mineral and maby go through alot of other minerals and dirt so thats why Shark Chomps are so big and you never see any smaller chomps flying around. Except of course fire chomps. But I don't think the're related or at least not verry closely to chain chomps. I'de even say they were more closely related to those sparky things. Ones the lighnening the other is the thunder. They both seem to fly around all the time effortlessly unlike the chain chomps, even shark chomps seem to be more affected by gravity. It still could be caused by the same mineral or a similar one though. Anyone have any ideas about sparkys and fire chomps and their relation to eachother and possibly chain chomps?

Shark Chomps mow through dirt like butter, so that's not a totally farfetched idea... They can't seem to stand solid rock though.

What creature are you talking about when you say "sparky" do you mean the thing from SMB2 or the ones from SMW that are the same species as Watt? Or are you talking about the amps from SM64?, those seem the most chomp-like of the three.

Shark chomps only eat that soft dirt, and all three of the others are completely unrelated to chomps. The Incoming chomps are smaller but can still fly higher than anyone.

You mean the chomps that try to divebomb you in YI? I always just thought they jumped really high. You can see them in the level backroung before they jump.
