Maybe when they transform, they become the planet, which through some as-yet-unexplained process draws life and a power star to it. Or maybe they just 'transform' into the planets, but leave behind their spirit as a pink luma, which can turn into a pink launch star leading to the new galaxy as in SMG. I also read somewhere that Blue lumas could turn into pull stars in a beta of SMG, though maybe thy do that in the final, too.

In the beat there were supposed to be a race of space toads with stars on their hats instead of dots.

That was the first E3 demo. In later betas, they had been replaced by lumas.

Yeah I think those Star Toads could even turn into the Star Bunnies. Then Nintendo actually pondered the question "What the heck would a Toad race be doin living in space anyways"

We've discussed Luma transformations before, I think the planet part is just for gameplay purposes, but they actually grow up to be Stars and other celestial bodies.
