I pretty sure the original SMB Manuel said that Bowser used magic to turn the residents of the MK into Blocks and Coins. Or as Shadowgoomba said, they could be natural.

It did, but I don't think it was the only source. He just transformed them into ordinary objects, and for them, ? Blocks are ordinary.

They don't strike me as being "made." They are far too numerous, can be in very remote places (like the moon), and they wouldn't yield a profit. They seem to be a manifestation of magical energy.

But why? What incentive is there to waste taxpayer coins or hard-earned profit to scatter ? blocks in whichever random place? And how could they reach hard to get to places like the moon and Smithy's factory?
