*dusts off thread* Looks like some... interesting new screenshots have been released. 7 of 'em, to be exact. The rest can be seen here: www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Paper_Mario_(Nintendo_3DS)So yeah, I think we can make a few inferences on the sticker gameplay here. It seems as though you can use them both out on the overworld and in battle. I'm not sure exactly how they'll be used, but it seems that in battle you'll use up a sticker every time you use a certain move. For instance, in the second pic, you can see that Mario peels the "Power Bounce" sticker from the bottom screen and uses it on the enemies. There are a bunch of different kinds of stickers, including Power Jump, the Sleepy Sheep Hammer, and some spring-loaded slippers. It looks like the battle system is getting pretty much a complete overhaul, really. To be honest, I wasn't so sure about this at first; getting rid of FP and BP and SP and partners and stuff seems like a pretty gutsy move, if they actually are being removed (We haven't seen the Chain Chomp at all recently, although maybe that crown guy in the trailer was a partner?). But I have faith in Intelligent Systems, and I'm going to approach this game with an open mind. I'm really curious to see how this bends the Paper Mario formula, and no matter how odd the game turns out, I'm sure it'll be fantastic as long as you're not close-minded.

No partners? Oh god this is sounding too much like Super Paper Mario for its own good. I mean come on, partners are Paper Mario's thing. Its where most of the interesting personalities come from. Also, how on Earth is Mario going to talk if he doesn't have a partner

Now, hold on. I didn't say that partners definitely aren't in the game. I only said that as of now, it doesn't seem like they'd accomplish a purpose in the gameplay, as the stickers have a wide variety of uses. Again, not confirmed.
But, if it does take this route, then we have to keep an open mind. Embrace the new and, just for a moment, stop thinking about the old. Take SPM. If people would just take the time to appreciate SPM for what it was supposed to be (a platformer with some RPG elements) rather than criticize it for not being what it's not supposed to be (an RPG), then they'd see that it's actually quite a great game. Likewise: Paper Mario 3DS probably might not stick to the formula, and if that's the case, you'll be able to enjoy it if you appreciate it for what it is instead of being annoyed that it's not more traditional.
Personally, I'm really curious to see how they pull of this sticker business. There'll be that part of me that longs for the more traditional stuff, yes, but ultimately, I think I'll really like this game.

Wait, there were never any BP in Paper Mario!
I do like the sticker idea though. This sequel seem to be putting emphasis on the fact that everything is made out of paper, rather then it just being a quirky visual style.
I hope they don't take the sticker thing to extremes though and make you use one every time you want to jump.

Wait, there were never any BP in Paper Mario! Badge Points? And yeah, my only true concern is the one you said. I'm not sure how I'd feel about constantly using stickers every time I attack, although I guess we'd have to actually see a batte in its entirety to see how this'd work. I doubt they'd make the battle system clunky and unfun... at least, I hope not.

The sticker system looks interesting, and would work fine if the battle system is stylus-based instead of controller-based. It could even work fine if it's controller-based, since the sticker page appears to replace the traditional arc of commands and its two button presses (one for type of attack, one for the actual attack).
The thing that worries me is that you can buy basic attacks. I didn't enjoy Superstar Saga towards the beginning of the game while I was still bad at the battle system and I was losing money by fighting battles (spent more on healing mushrooms than earned from the battles), and an inept player or bad resource manager could end up in a similar trap having to buy every attack. I hope there's actually a refresh system and the basic attacks are sold for players who want to rebalance their sticker sheets towards basic attacks instead of specials and items.
For those who can't read katakana (keep studying, Koopalmier!): ステータス suteetasu "status" バトルシール batorushiiru "battle stickers" マップピース mappupiisu "map pieces" オブジェクト obujekuto "objects" (special items, presumably)

In regards to the Super Paper Mario conversation, I think that there's one identifying attribute to it that makes it stand out. Namely, it's a spin-off of the Paper Mario series. Ignoring the fact that it's a spin-off of a spin-off, I think the worrisome thing(to some) is the prospect that it may very well be another spin-off. Super Paper Mario was good in many aspects, and it has a lot of followers, but even I'll admit that I want a return to the traditional Paper Mario formula. That is, RPG battles, partners, along with the constant worldbuilding and characterization.
Now, should this game be a spin-off, does that mean it can't be a good game? Not at all! It's always important to judge a game based on its own merits, and hey, it could be the stand-out entry in the series! But speaking for myself, I'd rather have a high quality, stand-out Paper Mario game. Personal preference and enjoyment also has a key.
On the topic of the game itself, I'm reserved. As I said, I love the idea of another Paper Mario game(and my poor 3DS has few games to play at all at the moment), and was quite happy when they announced this game. The battles seem interesting, if not different, but we'll see how those go. However, I'd personally like to see more in the way of partners. That, and I'm not a huge fan of the graphics. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is arguably the best received in the series, and it introduced a whole new look to the series. Super Paper Mario carried this forward, and if I'm correct, used the same graphical assets for Mario and co. Personally, I've never been a fan of the 'arm sprite simply swivels above a body sprite as Mario moves,' segmented look. Perhaps it's just me, but it feels a little old now, as it seems to be using the exact same template. I'd personally like to see a return to the individually-made sprites, as seen in the first game.
Bu~ut, that's just me. And with that personal irk aside, I'm looking forward to it. Albeit cautiously. I'm certain we'll hear more about it in a while yet.
