Because where there's a princess and royal servants, there just has be a king (and queen?) otherwise Peach would be queen by now.
I know the adaptations showed a Mushroom King figure, but how come such an individual hasn't been shown in game? You'd have thought he'd be a pretty important character in the series and all.

The original manual for SMB states that Peach is the daughter of the Mushroom King.
My guess is that, when the rulers of a kingdom are old enough and have a child, they stop ruling and their child takes their place.

Title though? She should in theory be Queen Peach, not Princess Peach.

Isn't it possible that politics is different in Mario's world? That is, she could still be called "Princess" until she's married.

I agree with SMBMaster, I think that the Mushroom King died and that the Mushroom Chancellor is probably a Steward of the Throne, well, at least until Princess Peach gets married... Just a theory.

Considering we never see him, I assume he's dead. On the other hand, he could have been the king of Grassland in SMB3...

No if he was the King of Grassland then wouldn't Peach have been there (She still hadn't been kidnapped yet) Plus isn't Grassland seperate from the Mushroom Plains?

Grass Land is separate from the Mushroom Kingdom.
My guess is that a ruler is still a prince or princess until they're married or at least have a child, no matter if their parents (king and queen) are still ruling / retired from ruling / died. I think the Mushroom King (the queen has never been referenced and may be dead, or maybe that she had a child with the king without becoming his wife, thus not making her a queen) has retired from ruling the kingdom and is now living somewhere in the kingdom but doesn't have any importance to the story.

The King might play a part in the MK's government but they never show him because it isn't important to the story

Knowing Peach apparently does everything (as she complains it's extremely tiring) and the Chancellor / Minister replaces her when she's kidnapped, my guess is that he doesn't.

It might be a minor role that he plays, but he has to do something. Unless he is either extremely sick or dead

Or the MK monarchy is different from the real-life monarchy.

I thought he might be the King of Grassland, too.
I believe it is the Eastern portion of Mushroom Plains. And keep in mind, the Castle in Toad Town IS called "Princess Peach's Castle", implying that it may not be the only one. But I still believe in my original theory, the King is dead.

This would be the place for me to bring up my rejected-but-never-refuted theory that Peach is a member of the nobility (-hime, which is a generic title for noble ladies), but not a royal princess (-oujo, -naishinnou, or -koushu); "princess" is often used to translate -hime in the sense of "high-ranking noblewoman". So King Toadstool could be alive, well, and (mis)ruling the kingdom from its unseen capital.

You know, how would we know if Toad Town was really the capital of the MK. You know maybe Peach only has power over one small section of the MK? It could be possible.

Perhaps the southeastern MK (as you can see her castle north-northwest of the peak of Hoohoo Mountain) is her fief.

I've always theorized that A) The Mushroom Kingdom is actually a republic and is governed by the Mushroom Cabinet Minister and that B) Peach is still a princess because she hasn't gotten married yet.

I think they'd have gotten around to renaming it if it were a republic. But that doesn't rule out constitutional monarchy with the monarch a figurehead, or even the monarch having real power but, due to being constantly abducted (if Peach is the ruler), power having fallen into the hands of the Mushroom Parliament.

I believe that Toad Town is the Capitol of the Mushroom Kingdom, and that Peach really is the Princess, but I think that it's custom to reserve the title, "Queen", until after marriage. But I believe that if the King is MIA, that the Mushroom Chancellor is a sort-of Steward. Oh well, thats just my Theories.

Okay I, for one, am rather fond of the idea that Peach's Title may only be changed through marriage.
Besides, "Queen Peach" doesn't have the same ring to it...
