The one bit of the SSE I hated was the end when Sonic showed up. He doesn't deserve to be with Nintendo characters in any game at all. Unsurprisingly, I also hate the "Mario&Sonic at whatever" series.

This came up in another thread:
For games that have been remade, some multiple times, which version is authoritative? The newest one only? The original only?
As much as it hurts to say so (I rarely like remakes), the consistent approach for me is to treat the most recent remake as the canon version.
This has the effect of disconnecting Banjo and Conker from Mario continuity by de-canonizing the only link, the original version of Diddy Kong Racing.

^Although a Gnawty enemy did appear in Banjo Kazooie, so maybe the only link isn't lost. Conker however, is kinda screwed.

Now that I think about it more, Tiptup (who was in DKR, B-K, B-T, and B-P) was in all those Rare games, yet still made his way into the remake. How is this possible?

Okay, anyone agree with my canon from top to least list?
Top (canon above all else)
Mario platformers (2D and 3D), in house spinoffs (Mario Kart say, made by Nintendo R and D or whatever), Mario and Luigi, Paper Mario Mario spinoffs of note made by third parties. Mario Party, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Strikers Less well known Mario spinoffs that add to the series (Mario Pinball Land? Yoshi spinoffs like Touch and Go? Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix?) --- Likely non canon line (anything below is probably not canon) Completely unknown spinoffs (like Itadaki Street DS, some modern but obscure arcade games that rehash consoles games by Namco and Capcom) --- Canon ends at most generous, anything beyond = alternate universe Important adaptations of the series. Not sure which, but presumably ones Nintendo has actually heard of. Ones Miyamoto might actually know of the existance of. Mario movie, cartoons, maybe anime movie and Mario kun manga probably go about here out of familiarity. Other adaptations with something to do with the series. Comics, other manga, anime series like the Armada series, books, etc. Adaptations so obscure or so awful they're pretty much ruled out 1984 style. King Koopa's Kool Kartoons, Ice Capades, Club Mario, Mario Kirby Masterpiece and a few others probably come here. The most Miyamoto had such likely had to do with them was... nothing, some executive probably signed them off to be made.
Below the worst even are probably the website and advertising materials, like commercials and such. Regardless of region.
And stuff that comes as merchandise, like any mistakes made by say, a Mario styled alarm clock.
Presumably, word of God... comes above the non canon line, but below any actual games unless it's someone like Miyamoto with a significant influence. Basically, the series writers and maybe translator's words are probably around game canon level, but the people writing the replies after you use the feedback forms (regardless of region) and likely the official magazine writer replies (regardless of region) are probably at the same level at the adaptations.
Bottom (officially do not exist)

I have no real objection (although "Itadaki Street" is anything but unknown in Japan, it is still presented as a departure from canon for all participating characters).

Itadaki Street DS? Isn't it Mario Party with Final Fantasy? Excuse me for asking, but I don't follow the Japanese-exclusive games.

It's Mario with Dragon Quest characters in what's fairly like Mario Party.

Ahh, I see.
While on the topic of Final Fantasy, what of Mario Hoops 3 on 3? Obviously characters like Cactuar aren't part of Mario canon, but should we consider the game itself canon at all?

Might I go ahead a throw another level into this, stuff that Charles Martinet has said. I know he's not exactly the top authority when it comes to official Mario stuff, but he is pretty close to the source. I mean, come on, he does the guy's voice. I think he should have a little say-so in what's true.

I think he should have a little say-so in what's true. His first Mario voice acting was in Mario's FUNdamentals or something. Thus, he was told by Nintendo of America that Mario came from Brooklyn (well, not exactly, they told him to take an Italian-from-Brooklyn accent). He doesn't play much video games either.

This is why I typically do. The remakes and ports usually add things rather than subtract, and in some cases explain away inconsistencies (like YI GBA touting Mario and Luigi as "brothers" instead of "twins" like the SNES version).
