Mushroom Kingdom : Both Japanese and English are the main languages. You can speak either Japanese or English as you want, or alternate after every sentence, nobody will look at you strangely. Some inhabitants only know Japanese, such as E. Gadd, while others are fluent in both languages (such as Princess Peach). Mario can understand Japanese perfectly but he can't speak much of it ; he also knows the Pianta language and Beanish. People usualy write in Japanese but official things (such as posters, some letters, place names, etc) are in English. Also, because Mario and Luigi always lived there yet have an Italian accent, it is a possibility there's an Italian district in Toad Town, or most likely in Mushroom City.
Beanbean Kingdom : Although the spoken language is exactly like Japanese, it is wrote differently and thus can be considered a different language that we'll call "Beanish". Only two persons in the kingdom talk French.
Rogueport & surrouding aeras : Japanese. No English is used at all, except by a few people.
Isle Delfino : An unknow language that we'll call "the Pianta language". They also use Italian as a secondary language, and English in tribunals.
Yoshi Island : Yoshis of that island (seen in SMW2) simply use the Yoshi language. Yoshi !
Yoster Island : Yoshis of that island (seen in SMW and M&L2) also use the Yoshi language. But Yoshi (the one) also knows Japanese.
Lavalava Island : Here, Yoshis can't speak the Yoshi language (Yoshish ?) but can speak Japanese and the Ravens' language.
Places like Diamond City only use English but we're not sure that place is on the MW. Apparently, the planet's main language is Japanese. It should be noted the Koopa Tribe knows an unknow language that they only use when they talk together, otherwise they speak Japanese. But higher autorities (such as Bowser and Jr.) also know English and use it once in a while.
The way of reading is, however, from left to right, like in America. But otherwise, most of the MW - and mainly the MK - is a Japan-ish place.

Considering Mario is only heard speaking English, I figured that's the language that everyone else uses unless sated otherwise. (like the yoshis)
I also think that alot of the text we see is translated form that species language (i.e bob-ombs and troopas make their little trademark noises when you talk to them.

How can I mix them up ? Yo'ster (a.k.a. Yoshi's Island in SMW and M&L2) is where Yoshi live(d). Yoshi (a.k.a. Yoshi's Island in the Yoshi's Island series) is where a Yoshi saved Baby Mario.
Also, excuse me, apparently they don't write in Japanese at all in the MK. At least not on official stuff (such as posters or official letters). I'll edit that.

Or not. In the Japanese games, there's Yoster Island (small island with an unique hill) where Yoshi (main chara of Yoshi's Story, secondary hero of SMW and SMG2) lives (or lived, now that he's in the Sky Station Galaxy (a.k.a. Sky Island)), that island appeared in SMW, YS and M&L2. And you have Yoshi Island (big island with three mountains) where the green nameless Yoshi (main chara of SMW2, playable chara in Mario Gold 64, main chara of YIDS and Yoshi's Universal Gravitation) that originally saved Baby Mario lives. NoA ****ed up a translation and in the end it hurted the American canon.
And in case you didn't know it, SMRPG's Star Hill is PM's Shooting Star Summit, while M&L2's Star Hill is a separate place. And the Chancellor and the Mushroom Minister are the same.

I knew the Hill and summit were the same Place, so lets call it Shooting Star Mountain! I also knew the Minister and Chancellor were the same! But I think the Galaxies where returned to their normal Locations(On ME) after SMG2. Thanks for enlightening me on the Translation Errors though!

Let's forget Mario games were released out of Japan.
I know what you'll say - Nintendo of America did many great things to the Mario canon, and actually without them we wouldn't have the L33T Hammer Broz joke, or Luigi's personality (see the cartoons), or Mario's name, but it doesn't change the fact the series is originally Japanese. "A" is the original, "B" gives it a helping hand, does that mean "A" and "B" can be considered the same ?
I first thought the Bob-Ombs, Koopas, etc... spoke their own language and it was translated for us... until I remembered Mario had to understand it too. Many things lead to believe most of Toad Town speaks Japanese (Peach's Japanese accent in M&L3, or simply the original texts) so Mario has to understand Japanese. And English. After thinking twice I believe the Piantas don't speak Japanese, they speak to Mario with their language but Mario knows it. Otherwise, I think the Koopas, etc... speak Japanese. Until we see them writing differently, but apparently from Paper Mario we know they write in English.

Humans & Toads - A Language similar to English, let's call it Common.
Koopas - A Language similar to Japanes, let's call it Koopanese(Feel Free to Submit something Better)!
Yoshis - I'm not sure what to Call it, but the only known Yoshi who can speak Common is the SMW, M&L2, SMG2 Yoshi!

Koopanese is sited as the name of koopa language in the Choose-your-own-adventure books. I know that's not very cannon, but it's the only clue we've got. They even have a picture of the alphabet (koopabet) I know I have the PDF of the book somewhere on my other computer, I'll upload it later. I call the yoshi language yoster  |

Peach speaks both English and Japanese whenever she wants. Same goes for the Toads. Koopas talk the same languages, but for now we only saw them writing in English.
So, to name things:
- Toad and Koopas use a "upgraded" version of the Japanese language, where there's a fourth alphabet - the English one. Let's call it... I don't know, Mushroomese ? Kinopian ? ... Japenglese ?
- Bowser and Jr. spoke in English for the totality of SMS. And all of Bowser's vocal phrases are in English. Maybe that royal Koopas tend to speak English more than Japanese. If English is used as an "highly ranked" alphabet (as it is used for letters, announcements, cities' name...) it makes sense.
- An unknow alphabet is shown in NSMBW. Maybe an ancient Koopa alphabet that is only used internally. Let's call it... Nokonese ? Koopanish ?
- Piantas talk Isle Delfino's language (either Delfinese, either Dolphicish, it's the same anyway). Mario understands this language so the text appears in Japanese. They also use Italian as a secondary name for places, and English during tribunal forums.
- Beanish people talk Beanish. It is the same as Kinopian but it lacks the English alphabet and is wrote differently. Mario understands Beanish so the text he reads appears in Japanese on the screen. If we take base on the Jap version then we can call that language "Mamerian".
- Yoshis talk the Yoshi language (Yoshish ?) but Lavalava Island's inhabitants talk the Raven language and Kinopian. And Yoshi talks both Yoshis and Kinopian.
- There are other languages through the world.

I'm not sure if this isin every region, but in the American M&L3, Broque Monsiure speaks in a sterotypical French accent. Hope that somehow helps.

In the Japanese version he speaks with a strong American accent. In the French version he speaks with a strong British accent (because France is more near of England than of America, and that's British English we learn at school anyway). Off-topic: Broque Monsieur's French is horrible. Awful. Disgusting. Nintendo of America should feel very ashamed. And why does he keeps saying "hon" anyway ? How is that supposed to be said ? WHAT THE HELL DOES IT MEAN ? ? ? At least the French version is funny - he talks French in an English context. The same goes for the Japanese version (well, he talks Japanese in an English context, that's even funnier). But in the English version he speaks Englsh with one or two words of French randomly thrown in. (and... what the hell does "hon" mean ?) On-topic: PDoogan : Interesting stuff. It's probably not canon but interesting still. |

So, we should give definitive names to the different languages we saw. Well, until Nintendo gives official info about it - basically never. Here are my propositions:
- Toad & Koopa language : Kinopian (as in Kinopio) ? Kinokian (as in Kinoko Kingdom) ? Nokonokish (as in Nokonoko) ? Koopanese (as in Koopa) ?
- Pianta & Noki language : Dolphian (as in Dolphic Island ) ? Delfinese (as in Isle Delfino) ? Montan (as in Monte) ? Marian (as in Mare) ?
- Beanbean language : Mamerian (as in Mameria Kingdom) ? Beanish (as in Bean) ?
- Ancient Koopa language : Koopanese (as in Koopa, Bowser's Japanese name) ? Nokogreek (as in Nokonoko and Greek) ?
- Yoshi language : Yoshish ? Yoshi ? Yoster ? Yo'ster ?

How about "common" for the Toad and Koopa language. (I think that is the name of the main language in Star Wars)
Delfinese sounds good since they do live on Isle Delfino
Beanish was used for the name of the people in the Beanbean Kingdom so why can't it be used for the language.
Koopanese sounds better than nokogreek (plus the name Koopanese was used in the Nintendo Adventure Books)
Yoshi - When you ask a Yoshi what language he speaks he will reply, YOSHI!

We can't call the Language should not be called English, do we call the Languages spoken in Star Wars or the Lord of the Rings? No! Lets call it Common. Here are the Languages:
Common - The Official Language of the Mushroom Kingdom, it is mostly spoken by Humans, Toads, and Goombas. It is similar(And almost completely Identical) to English.
Beanish - The Official Language of the BeanBean Kingdom, only spoken by Beanish.
Koopanese - The Official Language of the Koopa Kingdom, mostly spoken by Koopas. It is similar to Japanese.
Yo'ster - The Language spoken by the Yoshis.
*Bob-Omb Language - The Language spoken by the Bob-Ombs. It is very similar to Russian.
Delphinese - The Language spoken by the Piantas and Nokis. It is most common on Isle Delphino and the surrounding Islands.
KingKoopa, based on the List above you can see I agree with you. But Beanish can be the name of the People and Language, look at Chinese, which is the name of both the People and Language! But other than that, I totally agree!

I like kingkoopa's idea for the Yoshi language. It's like he said, if you ask a yoshi what language it speaks, it's probably going to replay with YOSHI!!!
