I thought the whole breathing underwater thing was retconned in SM64.

He can't breath underwater.
Ahh, well I fell better for solving that.

When he jumps in the water and comes back up he is fully healed. Maby the water has some sort of healing ability. Or maby it just rinsed off his wounds...:/

That's something that I don't think can be explained other than saying it's a gameplay oversight...

In the sidescrolling games, mario can breath underwater but still uses air bubbles.

Are there any underwater areas in New Super Mario Brothers?

Are there any underwater areas in New Super Mario Brothers? Yes, but Nintendo didn't put a breath meter in for two reasons: 1. To create a more retro feel 2. To make entirely underwater levels possible to beat

Maybe water in the Marioverse is just "airier". It has more air dissolved in it than our Earth water. Because of the extra air, people can breathe and use fire underwater.

But mario can't breath underwater in all games. Maby those are just super oxygenated bodies of water or something, but I think it's more likely just an in-game thing.

If the water is oxygenated, that certainly helps explain how Volcano Lotus plants can shoot fire underwater. Because they definately don't have a connection with magic.

It would explain why mario can breath underwater but not in space.

It would also explain why the Bros can use fire flowers under water and how Bowser can breath fire underwater in SPM.

It helps dismiss any connection with magic. (which is good) By the water being oxygenated, people won't take the easy way out as much, which is commonplace with Fire Flowers.

Mario probably has some magical air breathing thingy with him.

But, like I said, you can't use magic to explain the Volcano Lotus plants.

There underwater plants that shoot out spkiky rocks. Anyway, to answer the topic question, Mario and Luigi are plumbers....I can't beleive no one knew that......

They USED to be plumbers, they haven't done much plumbing lately exept maybe in M&LSS.

And they took breaks to do about thirty other things. Anyway, they look like fireballs to me. And it is called a VOLCANO lotus plant.

Than it shoots out lava, not fireballs. And can't lava survive underwater? (for a while anyway)

There's absolutely no way a flower could survive lava. The only things that can are things made out of lava or fire. But yes, lava can stay in its liquid form underwater.
