I've always viewed boos themselves as having never actually been alive; they're simply beings made up of ectoplasm that have always been that way. The other ghosts, however, such as the ones from Luigi's Mansion, were probably people at first (the human form is a dead give away for that one...get it? Dead give away? *ahem* Sorry).
I've alwasy thought of the Ghost Houses as having been constructed for the purpose of containing the boos. After all, we can see that they can make quite a nuisance of themselves in Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine. And since they apparently can't be destroyed that easily, perhaps the other races built these houses and trapped the boos within them using some kind of enchantment. That's my theory, anyway.
And when you say Big Boo, do you mean the ones from SMW and SM64, or do you mean King Boo from Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine? Big Boos just seem like boos which are made up of more ectoplasm than the others, possibly because of age, possibly from devouring other boos, ect. What King Boo is, on the other hand, is a good question. Perhaps he's one of the most ancient of the boos, and thus proclaimed himself king?

Lets just make this all about ghost like creatures. There's also these guys besides Boos: Boos could be the ghosts of dead creatures, like Casper or Nearly Headless Nick ( Harry Potter! ^-^ ). Much like Bow's mansion in Paper Mario, ghost houses could have been occupied by the owners, but then past away. And some ghosts just came in and stayed their.

Well, we need to decide whether Boos are just naturally ghostlike, or if they are the departed "souls" of dead creatures.

I'm thinking they've always been that way. Since they can obviously interact with the material world, which makes them corporeal. Thus, they kind of break the traditional definition of a ghost.

I always thought that boos were the souls of dead creatures except humans who become traditional ghosts, Dinosaur, who become eeries (SMW) and shyguys, who become shy ghosts or ghosts guys or whatever you would call them. As for skeleton creatures like skeleton goonies and drybones, I think that my be formed when a boo possesses a skeleton of a dead animal. Also gustys (SMW2) may be the spirits of unintelligent animals that couldn't talk or reason. That may explain why their are so many of them and all thy do is fly around.

My guess is that they don't want whomever they're chasing to know that they're coming, kind of like to stay hidden, I dunno.
