It still hardly matters since the racetracks have never been repeated in another game ( right? ).
Plus wern't we trying to figure out how big the Mushroom Kingdom and Yoshi's Island is?
We can't find the length since Mario never rode a kart across them.

So? If we can figure out character size in Kart, then we can copy that into "normal" games and see is the answers are reasonable.

Once you know how big a character is, you can figure out the size of their environement.

I'm gonna play Paper Mario some time and figure out how long the Mushroom Kingdom is.

I see what you're talking about, Toomai. Very interesting work. You too, Pdoogan--I guess we have proof that the SMB3 worlds are located off the coast of the PM continent.
Toomai, if we know the straightway of Baby Park is 145m long, how exactly are we to figure out how large the charactes are? We can estimate, but I'm not sure how exact we could measure without having an aerial, side by side comparison. Perhaps that's possible, though, if we take an aerial picture of the Baby Park track from the player's guide, divide its straightway evenly into 145 meters, and then superimpose an estimation of Mario's size relative to Baby Park on the Baby Park aerial shot. That should give us a pretty accurate size comparison. And then from there, as you said, we can use that measurement of Mario's size to figure out how large the environments of other games are.
Anyone have the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! player's guide? Preferably, the Nintendo Power one?

How about a screenshot of when the camera's panning before you race it in a GP?

Toomai, that would probably work. I think we'll be hard-pressed to find the exact screenshot we need, though.

Well, let's do some math. 56mph = 90kmph. (I work in metric.) If a kart can go 90 kilometres in an hour, then it can go 1.5km (0.93miles) in a minute. It takes about 1'20" to race Baby Park, meaning they travel 2km (1.24miles). Being 7 laps, Baby Park is then 290m (316.8yards) long, leaving about 145m (158.57yards) for the straightway. Now my brain is tired, but we can then figure out sizes of characters, and then other locations. Baby ParkI found an aerial view of Baby Park in an old Nintendo Power and snapped a photo of it (my scanner's broken at the moment). In the image I have marked where I'm guessing the 145m straightway is. If this is the correct area, we can then follow the procedure I laid out in my last post to find the size of the characters.

It looks like a DD kart would fit onto the black arrow at the start line.

I was estimating a kart to be a bit smaller than that. But I'm going to measure it all out as soon as possible, so that should help.

Good news I tested the distance in PM from Dry Dry Outpost to the farthest area left of Goomba Village.
I'm at school so I'll show the numbers later.

I don't think Nintendo would know (or care for that matter) how large the Paper Mario map is. They made the game, but I doubt they keep a file cabinet of statistics on hand for a game on a console they don't even make anymore...

But not the whole game is made of octagons. Some parts are linear.
