Most of the levels in Yoshi's Island should be the landscape of the island. Thus making Yoshi's island very big. And yet it's only a small island in Dinosaur land.
Mario trudged through many many lands. we need to see how large they actually are.
I lost my train of thought help me out.

I agree, it would be interesting to see how large the settings actually would be. It also makes you wonder how long the individual games are in game-time.

I've always thought the adventures lasted from a few days to a around 10 days.
Paper Mario could have happened over a couple weeks since Peach wasn't in a dungeon. How long could Peach live in that cage over a pit of lava?
And Yoshi's island is shown to be the smallest island, yet is you put most of the levels from SMW and Yoshi's island you can see it's very big. If they where to resize the map according to the games it should be roufly a bit smaller than Doughnut Plains. Thoughts? Spelling errors?

I dunno, it seems to me like they would take alot longer than that. I mean, he's pretty much traversing entire continents and island chains.

In SMB3 those where countries, and in SMB he was around the Mushroom kingdom. Plus many levels take place at night, so some levels could fit into one day.
Walk from one side of a high school to the other it doesn't take too long.
If you really compare a lot of levels Mario doesn't travel very far. Plus he couldn't have been going in a strait line like how the side view levels suggest.
I've thought about making some levels in 3D, and seeing how it could work.

Yeah, he might be going in a circle somewhat. But I think it's more of a case of the map screens not being to scale.

Obviously the map screens arn't to scale.
Otherwise the island would be about half of a quarter mile.

The levels are probably exaggerated a little bit too. Most probably don't cover as much ground as it looks like they cover.

Mario also travels a lot by moving platforms and pipes.
So walking isn't his main form of travel.

Unfortunately, with sidescrollers you can never tell how legitimate the environments are. They always have huuuuge wide open spaces in the background, and yet the characters continue to move in a straight line. In any case, I think it might take a little imagination to picture them realistically.

I think it might take a little imagination to picture them realistically. What do you mean?

I mean to imagine the 2D sidescrollers on a 3-Dimensional plane of existence.

In association with the world maps...
I think the Mushroom Kingdom ( PM version of course ) is about 40 miles wide. From the place where you talk to the sun in the left most area Flower Feilds to Dry Dry Outpost.
Dinosaur Land is about oh.... 30 miles left to right.
Yoshi's Island about 10 miles.

Distance is one of the few Mariology topics I tend to avoid on acount of I know I'll most likely confuse the heck out of my self. But if I had to give an estimate, I'd say that YM's measuments seem a little too small. You need to take into account the size of the planet and the number of different places we've seen in the mushroom kingdom alone. The Paper Mario version of what looks to be Grassland would, in my opinion, be...about a quater of the size of the United States. That may seem large, but think about how small that is compared to the rest of the world. I think the best way to figure out how large the enviroments is through time and average speed. How far can Mario walk in a set amount of time?

We can't really figure that out until we know the exact size of something, and that's quite an odd topic.

I actually think I made it too big. Grassland isn't in Mushroom Kingdom. And what do you mean PM version of grassland, grassland wasn't in PM.
And if it took Mario at least a couple weeks to do some adventures he wouldn't have gone too long distance.
Play Paper Mario, it takes a while to go from one side of the map to the other. But it could be completed in a day. Same for SMW. Making one world half the size of the US is blowing it WAY out of porportion.
Here's what I do to find distance, think of all the levels to a world streched out in a picture. All those levels make up the world with little space between them. Look at grassland, it's puny, if what your saying is right Iced Land would be from California to off the coast of Portugal. Nobody could survive going through that area, in snow, fighting enimies.
