Domes

In SMB they where red, green, white pink and blue.
In SMB2 they where striped.
In SMB3 they had eyes and checkerboard patterns.
In SMW they where blue with white spots.
In the SMW show they where used for homes.

And in almost every game they had eyes.

So, what are they? Dirt? Hollow? Plants?

I always thought they were some sort of Mushroom World plant. There must be a lot of sub-species since the come in all different colors and sizes...I never thought about what they were called until just now. I always just thought of them as those round things in the background.

Some of them have plant life on them.

With eyes, though? I even think some of them blink on occasion, but don't quote me on that.

There are a LOT of inanimate objects in the Marioverse that have eyes.

I think they're oddly-shaped mountains. But what would cause so many of them to form so perfectly?

If they were plants that would explain why they look so similar to each other. Mountians have many different variables that shape them.

Being earth elementals would make sense. But isn't there a "Vanilla Dome" somwhere in SMW that's hollow? Or am I thinking of something else?

no your right there is a Vanila Dome in Super Mario World but its no an acual dome

I guess it could be considered a dome. Since it has a roof and gets smaller at the top. It's not a perfect dome, but what else would you call it?

Also when you hit one of them with your hammer I think they give you something in Paper Mario 2

I think your thinking of a whakka. That little blue mole thing that gives you a whakkas bump if you hit it. There is a dome in Paper Mario 1 that drops a heart point everytime you circle it.
