Sorry for the double-post, but I've noticed something about ME species. It's that they mirror certain cultures.
-Bob-ombs seem to mirror Russia.Or at least the ones in PM2.
-Frogs from SMRPG seem vaguely Chinese. Mainly Frogfucious.
-Piantas and Nokis seem Mediterranean. Or Isle Delfino itself.
-Nomadimice and Dryite Toads resemble Middle Eastern folk.
Other dimensions have Cragnons and Sammer Guys, who resemble Cavemen and Samurais, respectively.

Usually the area that those species were found in was supposed to be similar to their personalities and accents. Fahr Outpost sort of reminded me of Russia

Well, it IS a reference to Cold War-era Soviet Russia...

And when the area references a time or a place they usually fit make sure that the people act like they are from that time/place to make it seem real. You wouldn't see a modern day Toad village in the middle of the Cragnon lands, it just wouldn't make sense.

I like to think that most real-world settings and cultures have a cartoon counterpart in Mario's world. This kind of thing can only be chalked up to funny writing, but if you reeeeally want to say it exists in a world parallel to ours, it would stand to reason that it has it's own versions of our many nations and customs.

Well, I missed out on another good discussion... Oh well, I agree with DINOSAUR, the Mushroom World probably has its own version of our Nations/Cultures.

But would Toads be considered American or Japaneese...

But would Toads be considered American or Japaneese... They don't have to correspond to a culture. But If I was forced to choose I'd say American, although that may just be the work of the localization team.

I'd rather say it's a mix of European and Japanese.

I guess it depends on where you live really, but the Toads don't seem to have too much of a cultural influence, they are just "regular citizens"

I'd say the same thing. I'd say the Toads are just the 'standard' type characters in the series, and hence aren't really meant to be identifiable with a certain culture (indeed, much of the series is basically meant to be as generic and applicable to anyone from anywhere on Earth as possible, it's not really meant to be really... reflective of any specific culture as much as a bit of all of them). The other 'races' (I don't like that word, especially as the real world distinctions are meaningless in a video game series) are basically just meant to reflect characteristics of certain countries and cultures, with the Toads and generic humans just treated as a 'norm'.
Truth be told, the general characters of the Mario series, such as the Toads aren't based on any real world culture or people, they're just fantasy characters which everyone can identify with.
