I wanted to make this thread in order to discuss the various secret weapons that the Koopa Klan seems to build every once in a while, the most recent of which being the Koopa Kruiser in Mario&Luigi: Superstar Saga. Now, it's obvious that the Koopa Klan is a very industrious group, having built a great number of war machines over the years without the benefit of automated assembly lines (as far as we know). Although granted, most of the work was probably slave labor from P.O.W.s and the like.
Anyway, the first real secret weapons to make an appearance in the series were the tanks and Doomships of Super Mario Bros 3 (and I suppose the naval fleet could be considered as such too). Now, we can see that all of these vessels are obviously made mostly out of wood, with the exceptions of the tank's treads, the Doomships propellers, and the cannons mounted on both, which all seem to be made out of metal. These were the only times we ever saw these particular weapons being put into use, and even so, I don't believe that we saw them fulfilling their true purpose. Such war machines were probably constructed for offensive means in preparation for a future invasion, and weren't meant to be just sitting around in Dark Land as they were.
Now, after the destruction of Bowser's Doomships, tank battalions, and naval armada, we suddenly see the increased use of metals in the Koopa's arsenal as opposed to the wood and stone that we were used to. First, in Super Mario World, we see that the Klan has mastered a primitive form of robotics in the form of the Mecha-Koopas. Then, we encounter Bowser's personal means of transportation, the Koopa Clown Car, which probably sports its own internal combustion engine given the RPMs needed for its single propeller to keep it afloat.
In Super Mario 64 we see that Bowser, in fact, has his own submarine in the level Dire Dire Docks. Whether it's deisel powered, like the submarines of WWII, or nuclear powered, like modern day subs, is up for debate (I'd probably vote for deisel).
In Super Mario Sunshine, we see a gigantic mechanized version of Bowser that's terrorizing Pina Park. Not much else to say about that one.
And finally, in Mario&Luigi: Superstar Saga, we see Bowser's new would-be capitol ship, the Koopa Kruiser. This metal behemoth is obviously powered by jet engines, as opposed to the propeller ridden Doomships of Super Mario Bros 3. We also see that Bowser's new can suspend itself in mid-air, apparently without the use of propellers or jet engines. This suggests that the entire structure is suspended by either magic or some form of anti-gravity technology.
Now to piece it all together. Why/how did the Koopa Klan suddenly switch from wooden vessels to metal ones? How did they suddenly seem to have a grasp of mechanical knowledge? What changed?
I have several theories on the matter, which I will share with you right now.
Theory numero uno: I'm a firm believer that the Marioverse and the DK universe are one and the same. As such, I believe it's possible that there may have been a possible alliance/business transaction made with Kremkroc Industries of the Donkey Kong Country games. Kremkroc obviously had a wealth of resources given the factories and mines they had set up on DK Island. Could it be possible that King K. Rool and the Kremlings supplied Bowser with the necessary resources needed to make these super weapons? Heck, for all we know Peach's personal jet and Mario's Skypop were made by Kremkroc too.
Theory numero dos: In regards to the robotics and seemingly anti-gravity technology that the Koopa's possess, I believe it's possible that they could have found the remnants of Tatanga's ship/ships that were left behind after his defeat in Super Mario Land. Being an interstellar traveler, he surely had an array off advanced forms of technology that the Klan could have acquired and reverse engineered.
Theory numero tres: Perhaps there was some kind of revolutionary mining success for the Koopas. Much like how we had the Gold Rush back in the old west, perhaps they had kind of a Metal Rush of sorts.
Theory numero quatro: Perhaps they just started building these things. Simple as that.
