lol man the memories of struggling with the camera. Mario Sunshine and the Knuckles levels in SA2B definitely stand out in my mind

What we need again is a world map similar to SMW.
If they can mesh all the 8 world types all together for this one...

I want an overworld like SM64 and SMS because those are actually fun and aren't completely linear...

One problem with an overworld is that it's hard to convey a sense of vast space; they're fine for a castle, a small island, a stage/dungeon, or even the Beanbean Kingdom, but it's hard to imagine that all the interesting features of an appreciable chunk of the globe are within casual walking distance. I can only see that working as something like eight overworlds for eight worlds.

Well, depends on how big said overworld/hub is. Still, I don't think an explorable area big enough to convey the appearance of a vast world would leave a lot of room left for levels to perfectly honest.
On another note, who said this has to take place in a vast world? Might it technically just take place in a small part of Mushroom Kingdom?

Dear Super Mario 3DS,
Please don't break Luigi's impressive track record so far (starting from NSMB DS).
Rest assured, he has been getting better treatment.
NSMB DS: Just hold L+R when you start the game to use him! It can even be done before you beat the game once. Can be kept up anytime, so much that it's possible to never play as Mario.
SMG1: 120 stars as Mario first, and now here's to Luigi's own adventure (the double of him notwithstanding, pfft). The bad traction is a setback, but the high triple jump works wonders.
NSMBW: Sure, he's Player 2 (this game is clearly made with multiplayer in mind), but you can still use just him in the levels while continually throwing Mario around into harm's way, particularly if he has a lot of lives.
SMG2: Before you beat the game, you can use him in certain levels. But after that (on 70 stars), just go into the L door on the back of the Starship Mario and voila! I'm using him a lot more than Mario (his high jumps also come in handy for the Green Star Hunt).
So yeah, Luigi's a hero again, even if he is sharing the spotlight with Mario (They're both still two sides of the same coin). It's safe to say that he'd have a good chance of being playable again in Super Mario 3DS.

You forgot to add;
Improve Yoshi's track record, the poor soul has only been in one out of every two Mario games now and can't be taken to every level. Please rectify this.

Well, I think that little pattern with Yoshi as it's been lately is going to persist.
If he doesn't show up here, he'll show up in Super Mario 3DS 2. But he should be improved like that.
I'd like for him to appear provided he actually does something. They flaunted his inclusion in NSMBWii: He was in the initial press conference, there's three of them on the box. He was made out to be a big deal.
Then you actually play the game, in which he doesn't carry into other levels and appears so few times it's entirely possible to forget Yoshi is even in it.

Well, what's the chance we'll get Boom Boom but not the Koopalings as well?
Heck, I'm gonna bet Reznor will show up somewhere in this too.

According to a journalist, one of the levels will be extremely Zelda-like, even featuring obstacles from Zelda games. My guesses: - it's inside a worm hole linking Mario's planet to Hyrule - Hyrule and Mario's planet are one and the same - The "universe mess-up" at the end of SMG ripped minor parts of Hyrule too, one of them ended up on Mario's planet. - It's just a tribute you don't need to care about.

Or Bowser is a huge Zelda fan.

I guess that's most likely. He did use Ganondorf's organ for his final battle theme in Mario 64.

Yup Bowser and Ganondorf are pretty tight. You know, as close as villains can get anyways.

When I was typing that post I thought about Brawl, it made me add that little sentence at the end.
