Another bit I loved: In Crumble Canyon, the whole area was falling apart, so when you beat the level, the bridge to the boss collapsed on the mapscreen. That's really a great way to tie in the overworld and the levels. Oh yes, as well as Foggy Fumes clearing up the fog over the Factory. The whole idea of making the last two worlds basically invisible until you get there is great, especially the Factory is not guessable from looking at the world map if you haven't seen spoilers before. Heck, I have seen spoilers and still didn't connect the dots until I saw the actual level.

That reminds me, anyone else catch the references in the background of Foggy Fumes? I spotted 25m and Mr. Game&Watch, though I've read there's more...

Yeah I saw both of them. But what do you mean more? I didn't catch anything else.

There's also Crocomire's skull hanging on a rope in the background.

Really? Wow!
Also, the art for this game is really cool. I really like, well, all of it!
P.S.: Better than NSMBWii, by far.

And that's not even the best cameo. In the Ruins, the level "Button Bash" has a monkey statue right in the beginning that's wearing Billy Mitchell's tie. Now THAT is obscure and nerdy.

Really!? Wow, that's amazing!
Dear Retro,
I love you.

I knew about the skull, but it's still awesome.
The tie reference I also heard, and freaking heck... that's really 'shown their work' as TV Tropes would say.
I just wish the game had more Kremling and Donkey Kong COUNTRY series references.

I just wish the game had more Kremling and Donkey Kong COUNTRY series references. Well, five of the worlds (except Beach, Cliff and Volcano) are based directly on DKC stage types. Kremlings... well, Cranky says "See you later, alligator! Heh heh heh..." Some of the statues also look very vaguely crocodile-like.

Oh, and the final boss has one eye that's bigger than the other. I'm pretty sure that's referencing K. Rool's eye tic.

I think he also says "So who hasn't stolen your banana hoard at this point?" obviously referenceing that his bananas have been stolen before. And I can also remember him complaining about having to be following you all the way up the mountain and asking DK if they knew anyone who had a plane (Funky Kong reference)

I've never played DKCR but I've heard about it. I'm dissapointed to learn that none of the Kremlings, not even K. Rool are in this. I was quite surprised when I first learned that this was being remade as I didn't think it would have worked without Rare's involvement. I'm a big fan of the DKC games and Rare in general so I hope Nintendo didn't ruin it too much. Taking the Kremlings out may have been a good thing as they were created by Rare, not Nintendo and for them to be Nintendo-ised might have ruined it and everything Rare worked so hard to achieve. For me personally, the DK games will never be the same again. I have not played a DK game since DK64 so I can't comment much on this or any of the other DK games but I just hope that Nintendo are keeping Rare's legacy alive by doing great DK games in the style of Rare but at the same time, not trying to take over from them. I actually thought the DK games would have been retired after Rare left for Microsoft. The DK franchise will always be more to Rare than Nintendo even though it was Miyamoto who created the title character. Rare created virtually everything else up to DK64 and I never thought of DK being a Mario character even though they appear together in the original Donkey Kong game.

I've never played DKCR but I've heard about it. You should play it. It's definitely the best (if only slightly) Mario-related game of 2010 for me. Seriously, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a giant disappointment, but DKCR was actually much better than I expected it to be. The things they do with the dynamic stage design are amazing, as is the overall visual presentation. It's bigger than the old DKC games (well, the bonus stages are repetitive, but that's the only flaw) and certainly has more variety. For me, variety is one of the most important things in games, and they did it very well.

Seriously, I was torn between buying this and Kirby's Epic Yarn with the Christmas money I had, but I finally decided on the latter.
So far, I haven't regretted the decision, but that's definitely the next game I'll get.

I've played SMG2 down my cousin's house who does have a Wii and I quite like it personally although they don't have DKCR. Does Nintendo have the rights to all of David Wise's compositions then? I read that the tracks are all remixes of the original DKC soundtrack.

They have the right to everything from anything from any Donkey Kong game ever made, bar I guess Jetpac from the Donkey Kong 64 arcade machine section. Of course they have rights to the music.

Thats fine just as long as he gets credited for composing the music and Rare for creating most of the characters. I knew Nintendo had the rights to all the characters and stuff but I just wasn't sure whether that applied to the music too. I would be really angry if Rare never got any credit, especially for Wise's perfect soundtrack.

They don't seem to get credit for the music in this game apparently, at least from what I've heard, no Rare staff have their names in the credits. Definitely doesn't seem fair.

That's stupid and plain wrong. Rare did much more to the DK franchise than Nintendo ever did and they have the cheek to completely disregard them from the credits? Or is Retro to blame for that, never mind. Who's to blame is not the point. The point is they should be credited. It was Rare who created most of the characters (except Donkey and the Tikis) as well as the music. Not crediting David Wise for HIS music is what annoys me the most as it is the music what is the most memorable of the DK games IMO and the fact that it was Wise who composed it all except for most of DKC3. I wonder what Rare think of this and Wise too. Also, I shouldn't forget Robin Beanland and Eveline Fisher also, I forgot they also contributed to the music too.
