I like to think that the regular (Super) Mushrooms can also be used as a fossil fuel for cars and other vehicles since they give massive boosts to the karts in Mario Kart.

There is a mushroom engine in Super Duel Mode of MP5.

The mushrooms in the MK series aren't Super Mushrooms, though. They are called Turbo Mushrooms.

^ No, I'm pretty sure they're called Super Mushrooms in the Mario Kart games as well.

Quick, someone find a Mario Kart Manual!

My Nintendo Power Player's Guide for Mario Kart Super Circuit calls them Mushrooms and Triple Mushrooms. The same goes for the game manual for Double Dash.
The gold mushrooms are called Golden Mushrooms.
Turbo Mushrooms don't exist...

Up until now I never really thought about how the Mushrooms worked as speed boosts. Maybe burning them unleashes some kind of flaming chemical that shoots out like a jet and happens to be strong enough to push a kart? ...Come to think of it, how heavy are karts? They're given vague star-based rankings, but..

Flaming liquid? Isn't that what Fire Flowers are for? Seriously though, I think it's because the karts have gas tanks that run on the Vim from Mushrooms, Super or no, and any extra Vim they suck up gives the karts a turboboost? ...Anyone?

Ah, I completely forgot about Plot Device Applied Phlebotinum Vim. That probably works better.

My French manual would like to talk with your American manual, buddy. *death stare* The French version makes a distinct difference between Super Mushrooms and Turbo Mushrooms. Only the Japanese manual can fix that. Let's call him !

KoopalmierInformation given by Nintendo of Europe doesn't count, because no one cares about them... >_> But, seriously, I like the idea of there being a mushroom-type that's exclusive to the Mario Kart games. But, I'm pretty sure that, officially, it doesn't exist. Honestly, look at them. They look exactly like mushrooms from any other Mario game. There's no way they're actually different.

@mo-bro: Vim being used as an energy source...where have I heard that before?
Honestly, I think that's the most logical explanation there.

Then why would Toads take part in the Mario kart competition if it involved killing millions of Toads in order to get enough power to keep the karts running.

Nah, I think all Mushroom-based species have Vim in their bodies. That includes Toads, Goombas, and regular mushrooms.

@ smbmaster: I don't really think that Super Mushrooms (or any of the other edible 'shrooms, for that matter) are really a species, though. Toads and Goombas are sentient. Power-ups are not.

KoopalmierInformation given by Nintendo of Europe doesn't count, because no one cares about them... >_> Tell me you aren't serious. Please. Ultra Mushrooms in the PM series look exactly like 1UP Mushrooms yet they are not the same. I say we check a Japanese source... if we find one. EDIT: Well, after checking, it happens they are only called "Mushrooms". Not "Super Mushrooms". Maybe that the Mushroom Kingdom's carburant is mushrooms ?

I was joking. lol
Mushrooms and Super Mushrooms are, more or less, the same thing. And the caps of 1-UP Mushrooms are a darker shade of green.

Mushrooms can be eaten, cooked with anything, they can decorate things, etc... They could very well be used as a carburant too.

"Being eaten" and "Being cooked with anything" are virtually the same thing....
But, I'm fine with the idea of them powering vehicles. That doesn't bother me (I never said it did).
What bothers me is the idea that mushrooms are sentient creatures, which disturbs me greatly. Everyone eats them, for crying out loud!

I like the vim theory; it's been refined into UFO fuel so using vim-containing objects to give an engine a burst of speed makes sense on the face of it, and it might even explain how they make their eaters so much larger (a sudden surge of vim). I don't see any reason why mushrooms would need to be sapient to have vim; it could just be the natural life force of fungus-beings. 1up: "Species" doesn't imply sapience or sentience. Super Mushrooms and 1-Up Mushrooms are probably separate species, and neither is sapient or sentient. Or are you saying that power-up mushrooms are artificially manufactured and shouldn't have any remaining life force? Koopalmier: Where did you find a Japanese source? Shin Super Mario Daijiten is down and I don't trust their Wikipedia any more than I trust the English one. (And 1up has a point - Americans like me don't hear NoE's statements and don't have a reason to seek them out, so their info doesn't make it over here any too quickly.)
