A random Koopa in Paper Mario commands some Bob-ombs...I don't see why a random Magikoopa couldn't command the Toadies. Also, Toad has no unique characteristics whatsoever.

Then that Koopa is a Character! Even if it is Generic, it's still a Character if he has ANY Characteristics! Kamek is the MagiKoopa who raised Bowser, commands the Toadies, and is the only one Bowser does NOT treat like Dirt! That makes him a Character!

He's a character, but they're not a character separate from the rest of the species, and Koopa, Hammer Bro, Blooper, etc. isn't their name.

I know! Yoshi may not be Yoshi's name either, but he's still a Character, lets just call him Kamek!

Toad doesn't have special characteristics but he's there to represent the Toad people. Much like how Yoshi is there to represent the Yoshi people.
Plus Luigi calls him "Toad" in SPM.

And his name is Toad in SMB2, and he is the First Mushroom Retainer in SMB1!

Actually it's unknow which Mushroom Retainer he was in SMB1, but it'd make sense he's the first as he represents the whole species (and thus is most of the time the first Toad you meet in the game). Also SMB2 was a dream.

It's possible that the Sub-Connians made them think it was a Dream, but I'm guessing Mario just ate a Bad Mushroom that day. But still, Mario was Dreaming that his Pal, Toad was on an Adventure with him!

Even the SPM info for Toad says: "This loyal subject comes from another dimension. Many people in that world have strange head spots." He's just a loyal subject, but there are LOTS of Toads. And obviously, there's a trend for them to be called Toad, too, just like Yoshi and Birdo. Since Toad was a character in SMB2, people tend to assume he's unique, but I think that's really just confirmation bias. It could have been any Toad at all.

Yoshi is a character. I'd like to see that moment when Luigi calls him Toad. SMB2 represents the species.

Luigi calls him "Toad" at the very start of the game (not counting the opening, with the weddig scene and stuff). Yoshi IS a character, but nothing tells us the other Yoshis we saw were Yoshi too. SMG2 may feature an entirely different Yoshi. Who know, maybe that every Yoshi egg you see contains a different Yoshi. But we assume it's the same Yoshi from Super Mario World because it makes things more simple. Same goes for Kamek, he appeared in YI and YIDS with a major role (right hand of Bowser), but we consider every separated-from-the-others Magikoopa we see as THE Kamek because it makes things more simple. EDIT: www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2I4dDpk1aIEverytime we see a Toad that is made separate from the others, we should consider him as the Toad (except when we see the Mushroom Retainers, Toad isn't separated from them but is there somewhere).

Here's another thing that I think affirms that seeing Yoshi/Toad as the same character is only in people's heads: since I came from a country where we didn't have video games, the first time I saw Yoshi in a game was Yoshi's Story, a game that specifically underlines that no Yoshi is unique, always calling them just "the Yoshis". That being my first exposure to the concept of Yoshi, I could never see how people saw the Yoshi in other games as being always the same character, since in my head, they're all interchangeable.

There are 2 Green Yoshi Characters! The one who saved Baby Mario(YI, YIDS), and his Son(YIDS, SMW, YS, SSB, and SMG2). The Yoshis from Sunshine are obviously a Sub-species!

SMW's Yoshi can't be SMW2's Yoshi's son. They live on separate islands.

So? That doesn't mean Yoshi can't move! Whether or not he is his Son can be neither Proven or Disproven at the Moment. It's Speculation!

The island in Super Mario World is named Yoshi's Island.

Did you saw the first message of this thread, at least ?
And if you want to go "We aren't in Japan, we aren't Japanese, we don't play the Japanese version, we'll stick to the American one" then look at Yoshi's Island (Yoster Island) as it appears in M&L:PiT. It's a small island with an unique, brown mountain (Kappa Mountain). You know, like in SMW. It could've been something like "it first was Yoster Island, but then something happened and it transformed into Yoshi Island, problem solved" but SMW2 happens before M&L2 and SMW. Also Yoshi Star Galaxy's Japanese name is Yostar Galaxy. See what they did there ?

I think you're reading too much into it. Yoster Island could very well just be an alternate name, just as New York City is sometimes called the Big Apple and L.A. is sometimes called the City of Angels.
