Well let's see. The're similar but not really the same so let's start with thwomps. What are they? I remember in SMW and I think super mario brose 3 that they were considered a type of ghost that gaurded special areas. they apered to be covered in spikes and could float through the air (special antigrave/magnetic mineral?). In games where whomps would also apear they seemed to be related to whomps somehow, whomps wich state that they were used as building material, I dobt you would want to build something out of a ghost and thwomps do look like they might make good stping stones as well. It could be that they were all livng stone creatures at one time much like the clefts and when thwomps die the become a sort of solid ghost retaining most all of their attributes even though they are technicaly dead. The thwomps in those games, however apered a bluish color and unlike the ghostly versions from other games had no spikes and were a perfect cube shape with a face on it. They also could levitate and there was also a mumified version with shaper corners but pretty much the same....

In Yoshi Story there was another type wich apered to be a gray stone sort of like the gohstly SMW onse but it didn't aper to have spikes of it's own rather a spiky metal sadle. It is the only type of thwomp that can't seem to levitate by itself. Black shy guys would pick them up by chains and drop them when a yoshi got close. All the thwomps, whomps, and thwomp/whomp like creatures have faces and seem to be alive...or dead.....But not nonlivng.....

In general, I would say that the Thwomp family is a group of stone elementals. How they levitate is anyone's guess, maybe magnetism? Here's a list of the Thwomps I know: - Normal Thwomp
- Brick Thwomp (the blue ones)
- Whomp (second cousin or something)
- Tromp (those spiked balls that roll down hills)
- Electrothwomp (the ones on Rainbow Road in SMK)
And I don't think the Black Shyguys' spiked weights have anything to do with Thwomps.

And that big rock boss and those other big thwomp like things. Also, the ones from yoshi story have faces. It's been awhile since I last played but I think they make noises when there are droped too. I might be wrong about that last part but I think they definatly have a relationship with other thwomps and whomps and the like.....

Hey I'm new. You're also forgetting Thwimps, the mummy Thwomps/rolling things in SM64, and the robotic quiz guy in the X-Naut base of PM: TTYD.

Yes, but he just seems to be a normal Thwomp. The one on the moon seems different.

The one in Shwonk fortress is like the ones from Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros.3 that are said to be some kind of ghost, also the ones from some Mario Kart games, that look just like the ones from SMW and SMB3 so I'm guessing they must be the ghost kind too.

What benefit is there to female Thwomps being round? Like in Partners in Time?

Besides diferentiating them from the males, I guess it'd be easier for them to role down mountainside in case they ever needed to do that...

Okay, but wouldn't males need to do that too? Perhaps the females do the hunting? The one in PiT did seem more agressive.

I don't think thwomps are ghosts.
And as for female thwomps, it seems likely that they do the hunting like you said. But then what do they eat? And how are they formed? It seems that thwomps are naturaly existing creatures givein the concept of thwomp volcano. Are volcanos their natural habitat?

If that was so, we'd see a lot more of them in volcanoes. Other than that one place, all I remember of Thwomps in volcanoes are the three Tromps in Paper Mario's Mount Lavalava.

It clearly states that they are ghost in SMW hand book and I think in SMB3 handbook.

The SMW strategy guide says it's a stone with a motion sensor. (Or mabye it's just their eyes)
