Dang it! I can't go against a instruction manual. But anyway, here's the catch card for thwomps:
This block-headed rocker really loves making pancakes. All that macho pounding must be a sign of insecurity.
As you can see, it has no useful imformation whatsoever.

It seems like sources care more about humor than actual information nowadays, which I suppose is good, but makes it all the harder for us.

Well if thwomps are rock ghosts, how douse thwomp volcano fit in?

Maybe the ones on Thwomp Volcano are alive, and then Bowser uses the dead ones for his castles.

Bowser does seem to be consistent at using dead/non-alive things as security.

Also, Bowser probably uses a spell to unite ghost and stone, as Thwomp Volcano is made out of nonliving Thwomps.

But whomps at least have a memory of a time when they were used as steping stones. Were they non-living then? Or were they just immobilized somehow?

Whomps, on the other hand, appear to be artificial. Those stubby arms and legs would make things difficult for natural survival. Bowser probably made them as another weapon when Thwomps didn't seem suitable or he didn't have them available.

Did thwomps disapeare or something from one of those games I havn't played yet? ? Or did you meen that Thwomps are replacing twacks, or is it whomps replacing thwacks?? I don't understand. Are thwacks even a part of the current conversation?? Or did...

Thwacks are not part of the conversation yet because Bowser hasn't used them yet. I'm not saying that Thwomps disappeared, just that maybe, after using all of his Thwomp resources, Bowser would use Whomps instead...I don't know, it's just a theory.

I don't know about that. Thwomps are "designed" to move up and down and crush things. Whomps seem more like walking walls. I wouldn't say one can replace the other.

Well that's why I said maybe Thwomps wouldn't be appropriate for the situation. Like maybe there isn't enough vertical space or something. But wait, Thwomps can move horizontally. Hm...Whomps don't really seem to have a good purpose. Everything they can do, Thwomps can do better. And I wasn't really saying that they could replace Thwomps or vice-versa, just that if Bowser didn't have any Thwomps and he wanted more obstacles he could use Whomps.

I heared whomps were used as stepping stones in the past.

I'm pretty sure that Bowser doesn't "recruit" his army.
I reckon that he just plays them against the Mushroom Kingdom in a dictatorial fashion (You know, "They're stealing all of your food and they treat you as inferiors. Those Mushroom Kingdom folk must die!). We ALL saw Bowser dictating to his army in SPM. Maybe Whomps were at a low moment at the time, as they were being used as stepping stones. And so Bowser decided to feign sympathy, release them, and wage them against Mario and co.

He can't dictate all of them. If that were true everyone would be of equal rank. So no General Guy, King Bob-omb, Crystal King, etc.

I don't know what you mean. The bad guys have their own leaders, but bowser technically rules them. I don't see the problem.

A dictator would already have generals. General Guy and such (which don't seem to have a strong connection with Bowser orher than they working for him) would be reduced to mere infiltry.
