Cross-breeding with a tanuki.

Hrrrrrrrrrrmrmmrrmrrmrmmmmm......:/ A rodent breeding with a mushrrom? Is it truely possible? Maybe with a bit of genetic manipulation? Who would promote such a thing as this? Bowser? I think it sounds a lil far-fetched...But who konws, maybe that is what happened...

Actually taunkis are more closely related to dogs, but the tanooki in the Mario game seems to be referred to as a raccoon (i.e raccoon Mario)
Just for the record, I refer to the Mario character as tanooki and the real animal as tanuki.

Uh...it's not a real animal. It's based on Japanese folklore where it is indeed a raccoon. There's other evidence too. The tanuki tricked people that it gave money to, because the bills were actually leaves. Also, the tanuki was known to trick people by transforming. Tom Nook is based on the tanuki (hence his name) and he's a raccoon. Also, the furniture turning into leaves is likely a reference. Maybe you're thinking of something else? To answer MBY's question, I was originally going to say that the magic happened billions of years ago, but I came up with a better theory: parasites. Goombas are a fungus, right?

Well, it's been updated since I last saw it, but in games it's still mostly referencing the raccoon aspects of it.

It just seems unlikely that any kind of mamal would breed with a mushroom.

Right, so I changed my theory. The Goomba's a fungus, so it can also be a parasite to the tanuki/Tanooki.

Or the tanoombas just found one of the tanooki suits that Mario uses.

Maybe we should just say that the Tanookies were skilled talers who used to make suits in their image, filling them with their magic and then selling them to other races. They sis that in the past and either sold a large amount of suits to the goombas at some point before their mass disaperance or the goomas or somebody stole a large amount of the suits. (and then fleed to the beanbean kingdom to avoid being arrested or whatever)
