How would it get its form though?

Maybe the leaves had a little bit of statue power in them but could only use it if put with more leaves

The creature it's based off of in Japanese legends, the Tanuki, was known for being a little sneak with the ability to transform at will. So the suit could change its shape to fit Mario and turn him into a statue.
