But, like I said, there seems to be too consistent for just being a coincidence. And remember that the Pit is hard for the average person to reach. (It's harder than the 1000-Year Door, which most people can't find.)

Perhaps it was easier to find a thousand years ago.

Which brings me back to my original point: they couldn't survive that long. (We're going in circles)

But they are like rock monsters. What do they eat? What do they need to survive anyway?

Goombella joked around and said they ate the moon's cheese...Also, why would they need camouflage abilities if it's not for hunting or escaping?

Since we're not really getting anywhere here, let's talk about something else interesting...
I was looking at Pit A in SPM closely today, and the whole thing seems like a digital display (Game & Watch-ish). Going 3D shows that it's all just part of the wall. And the chests even open frame-by-frame, and the game only lets you see the opening in 2D. So is that pit a construction?

I haven't played the game, but everything seems to be in a different dimension. Could it be for that place too?

Wasn't that pit created by the ancients to test the powers of the pure hearts?

Must have been. I also found circuit boards in the floor and there are drawings on the walls that show the locations of the Pure Hearts.
