I was going to start a new thread about Peach's castle from 64/PM, but then I realized that we already had a perfectly good one right here. ^_^
In the paintings thread, Claws brought up the idea of reconciling Peach's castle from Mario 64, with the supposedly same castle in Paper Mario. We want to try and find between the two the actual lay-out of the castle and, if possible, find the purposes of the individual rooms. I'm going to have to find a way to play throgh Paper Mario again before I can take part in this one.

Well, unfortunatly Kami you'll have to play to the very end of the game. Just before you fight Bowser you can walk all around Peach's castle.
The main mezzanine looks exactly like the second floor in PM and the doors are basically in the same places as M64. I could make up the M64 floor plan if you want.

That might be useful for some people who havn't finished the game. Good thinking, Mastar.

Ok apparently not. The PM main room is the same thing on the second floor, in contrast to M64. [ spoilers, your gonna read them anyway so just do it ] When you get to Peach'scastle at the end there are NO enimies in the castle. It's all dark but don't worry about that. At the end of the library is some type of shroom. In the room with the chest, there's a prize/gift/powerup thing. In another room is a closet, open it to find a mushroom retainer, he will let you rest. I don't think there's anything in the kitchen but check all the rooms just in case. ( I havn't played the game since last summer )

I just got the rom of Paper Mario and started playing it again. I noticed at the beginning of the game that although the layout of the castle's main lobby is the same, they seem to have taken out the doors to the basement completely. The door to the Whomp's Fortress room is also missing (as is the door to the snow level, I believe). And they also seem to have transformed the aquarium room into the kitchen. Although, the major difference I noticed is that they completely took out the stairs to the second floor and instead made it a second lobby-like room.

That's what I said. But look, since the camera doesn't change, you can't see the door to Cold Cold moutnain, if there was a door. And there's no basement or outside acess.
TELL ME WHERE YOU GOT THE PAPER MARIO ROM!!![/u]

I got it off of Kazaa, which is actually the first time I have ever gotten a working rom off of that freaking program ~_~. Usually I have to use IRC.
As for the door to Cold Cold Mountain, I'm relatively sure that it's not there either. Sometimes when you get over in that corner, the wall in front of you becomes transparent so you can see Mario, and I'm pretty sure the door wasn't there.
I had an Idea while I was looking at the smoking crater left behind by the castle, though. Since Bowser very obviously destroyed that land around the castle, and probably some of the castle itself when he uprooted it, perhaps the castle from SM64 is a replacement castle. Maybe it was constructed because the PM castle was too badly damaged?

M64 happened before PM.
And I meant there's no door to Cold Cold Mountain. And you can't walk around the crater.
Peach's castle wasn't damaged at all. It was cleanly lifted up. The rubble is from the surrounding floors and walls by the castle.

When I say I was walking around the crater, I mean the screen just north of Toad Town where you can get right up next to the gaping hole in the ground and there's a single toad walking around.
As for the timeline, nobody can really be sure when the games take place. And I havn't finished PM yet, so I'm not sure how badly damaged the castle is afterwards (if at all).

I have the guides to both Paper Mario and Super Mario 64, so that should be helpful. First, here's Paper Mario's first floor lobby. img100.echo.cx/my.php?image=pmcastle9mv.pngAnd here's SM64's first floor lobby. img19.echo.cx/my.php?image=sm64castle9hz.pngNow, we could explain these differences by simply saying that the castle was remodled after the SM64 incident. Or we could create our own first floor lobby by drawing one that includes everything from both versions.

I got the M64 guide too, and this gay Brady games version of the PM guide. There isn't really a difference, and Bowser could have magically added on doors. And the castle wasn't damaged at all in PM. Plus magic could hold it together if anything happened.

I'm thinking that after SM64 the castle was just remodeled.

Yeah the castle could have been remodled any number of times.

I guess that's the beauty of constructed things in continuity: no matter how many discrepancies, we can always just say it was remodeled.

How about the castle grounds? We've seen a mini-park with a race track in front, a small fountain area with an entire city seemingly a short distance away, a golf course, etc. How do we explain this?

I like the M64 version. Short dirt path that, but instead of ending, it goes to the large door with a star on it ( Paper Mario ). I combined Mellee, Paper Mario, and M64 all in one pick that's extremly accurate to the M64 version. But I added to Merllee's houses bridge which is over the lake ( which in Paper Mario was a small stream ). I also added the fountain. For Mellee I just added the flower bed from the trophy. I cut out a lot and I hope you like this: img.photobucket.com/albums/v691/YoshiMastar/PeachsCastle.png

That's excellent. About the Toad Town thing, though: I think that there actually is a racetrack in front of the castle. The racetrack is just behind Toad Town. When we saw Mario go from Toad Town to the Castle in Paper Mario, what we didn't see was him crossing the race track to get there. Awkward? Yes, but this way it doesn't exclude any of the games.

I will not accept a race track in front of the castle. For one thing it's inconvienitent to get across it. Second, we would have to put a few golf courses in the way too. Just leave all the sports stuff near the castle and not in the way of things.

I guess we could say they're next to the castle or something. I don't know; I'm partial to the racetrack-and-golf-course-in-front-of-the-castle theory because it includes all the games. We could say these things were torn down after use, or that there's a big walkway from the town gate to the castle grounds.

Maybe we'll see the Royal Raceway in Mario Kart DS. That could possibly settle something.
