Then maybe the KB fortress was originally a place where all of the Koopas in Koopa Village lived

I doubt it. Maybe before the Bob-ombs moved in, but I don't think so. And Goombario said himself that no one knows who built it originally, so there's no point in theorizing.

I always thought it might have been one of the old forts used in SMB1.

Seems too watery and not lava-y enough, though.

I would think that keeping lava in a castle would require effort, so when the bad guys leave any lava there would give it up.

Doesn't explain the water though.

Maybe the KB tried to somehow drain the lava and then water came up and turned the lava into land and then the KB destroyed the land and built a swimming pool

The Koopa Bros. have nowhere near that kind of influence to do that.

The lava probably was drained long before the koopa bros. found that castle. Paper Mario happend quite a while after SMB.

And a river started flowing through, breaking into the castle and flooding it?

There is a river of some sorts near the castle. I can remember having to shoot Kooper across a river to get to the KB castle

Exactly. So it seems like a giant stretch to say that the castle is built, fully equipped, lost by Bowser (due to Mario), become deserted, lose its lava, have a river come through and corrode solid stone enough to bust through and flood the castle, become occupied by Bob-ombs, get taken over by the Koopa Bros., become fully equipped AGAIN by Bowser, lost by Bowser AGAIN thanks to Mario, become deserted again, and eventually be re-populated by Bob-ombs all within the course of Mario's life, and not even that far between the ages, either.

In a span of probably 5 years too.... I give up

It may have been longer than 5 years

Not much. The only games in the timeline by Paper Mario (as far as we know) are: SMB1 SMB2 SML3 & Wario Land games SML SML2 SMB3 & Wario's Woods SMW Dr. Mario Trilogy ( , only one had a story) Super Mario RPG SM64 Mario Party 1-3 Paper Mario? Luigi's Mansion? The last two can be debated in order, but I believe that it's the order on now. Anyways, Those games couldn't have taken longer than 5 years in total time!

There's no set in stone timeline. Miyamoto's even confirmed this.

I know, but... It doesn't seem logical for even the amount of main games (SMB1+) to be more than five-seven years.
Off topic: There is one timelined area. Bowser was defeated (and obviously not seen for a long time), and when the fortune ghost in Luigi's Mansion sees "Bowser", she exclaims how there's no way he could be alive. That makes Luigi's Mansion fprcibly take place when Mario defeated Bowser in some way that he could never have survived, but did, which is Paper Mario, or at least I believe so. It makes SMS's revealing of Bowser at the end seem more climactic if SMS takes place right after Mansion.

I think Madame Clairvoya was referring to King Boo's Bowser suit. And I don't think that Paper Mario was meant to imply that he was soundly defeated...Eldstar said he'd be back.

He did? I can't remember because I haven't had a full playthrough of that game in years. She was shocked that the Bowser suit was back? Is that what you're saying?
