Stars seem to be a very popular, if not sacred, on Mushroom Earth. There are stars that watch over the planet, stars that grant wishes, stars in our sense of the word, etc. Why do you guys think that stars are so revered? Is it because some stars can grant one with invincibility? Or is it because they're such a great power source? (As seen in SM64.)

I always thought it was because the can grant wishes, but your right, they do have alot of other uses. In fact, Mario Party 5 even has a star powered engine in the super duel mode. Also since the Mario bros. are the protecters of the Mushroom Kingdom and they get their power from the stars (I.e "star power) I guess the mushroom citizens should be rather greatful.

Yeah, without star power, the Mario Bros. would be a lot weaker.
And shouldn't this be in the culture board?

Done.
So is this star power something they have willfully tapped into, or does it just empower them automatically while they're in the Mushroom Dimension? It gives them their increased stamina and jumping ability, right?

I always assumed it was involuntary, although they may have a little control of it. So they don't cheat in the sports games and whatnot.

That would explain the limited avalibility of special moves.

As seen in the Fungi Forums:
Power stars give off radiation ( or magic ) and can temporarily increase the users mental and physical ability. Eventually the magic wears off, or is transferred to something else. Bowser used star power to seal the doors in Peach's Castle, but when Mario got more star power than the doors seals, it cancelled out Bowser's spell. Having lots of star power over a long period of time starts to increase your bad side as well. Since Mario only had the stars for the little time in M64 nothing bad happened to him. Though the resulting effects of 120 power stars gave him probably permanent increased agility, but not enough to make him punch through concrete or jump 10 yards.

Also the food, air, water, and love they get in the Mushroom World most likly helps. I read in one of the Chronicles of Narnia that the air was so pure or something that the humans felt courage, and strength from it. Or something like that. Might have been all physiologic though.

Sounds good. But does too much star power really cause a person to go bad? I would think that having too much star power is comparable to having too much money: it corrupts only when the owner is inclined to greed.
I like your explanation for SM64's doors.

Doing bad things of any ratio is human nature.

Perhaps this is where the ztar comes in. Ztars seem to be just like stars only evil. Perhaps it's another form of power that is created when people do evil things, rather then make wishes.
As for the whole radiation thing, I think that is true to some extent like when the brothers use a star man to become invincible. But I was always one to assume they were born with there powers. Look at Partners in Time, Your average one-year-old cannot shoot fireballs and jump four feet in the air. There has to be something special about them or everybody in the Mushroom Kingdom would be fighting like that.

Well the fire flower can give anybody fire powers.
And jumping high in the air is always "that video game thing".

Not really, who have you seen besides the Mario bros. and Wario (SML2) shoot fireballs. (The cartoons don't count since the writers had no idea what they doing.) And by using a fire flower, I mean literally shooting fireballs from their hand, not just putting the flower in front of them.

Are you talking about shooting fireballs without a fire flower?

No, I'm talking about the power they get from the fire flower in in side-scrolling games.

Can't everyone get the fire flowers power?

Well no, not really. The Paper Mario series has shown us other people can use a fire flower by making the flower shoot all the fire balls while they just stand there. But I'm talking about the power you can take with you and shoot fire as long as you like (untill you take damage).

But those are two different types of flower, right? The tulip kind from PM and the...uh..."round" kind from the MB games.
The thing is, what would happen if some Toad tried to use a "round" kind? Would he get burned, or would nothing happen? See, that would tell us if the flower only "works" for star-power infused people or whether star power is only needed to control it.

I think they're different. Because Mario uses them the same as everyone else in the Paper Mario games. Also, I don't think the round kind works for other people. Look at Super Princess Peach and the Yoshi games, fire flowers aren't even mentioned even tough all those games take place in many of the same places as games starring Mario. So I would guess they would just be considered usless an left out.

We know that size-altering mushrooms can be used by all kinds of people. (Mario Party 4 is one demonstration of this.) But I guess fire flowers are a different matter. I don't think, however, that the Mario bros. are the only ones who can use them. Perhaps anyone with star power can utilize them in this special way. It wouldn't make much sense for these flowers to litter the landscape when their true powers could only be harnessed by two guys.

But who else do we know that has star power (In this day and age) and why aren't they out doing somthing, well...super?
