Maybe the Hands infused each competitor with star power whenever they were about to fight, and having this power allowed them to defeat the Hands. Probably not, though.

I wouldn't call it "star power" That seem to be more of a Mario Bros. thing. But it's definatly more power then the normally have in other games. Like how kirby can use his in game attacks he get from enemies but can still copy the power of other SSB opponents.

I'll go out on a limb and say it's "Nintendo Power".

Haha. That's a good idea.
I'd say the power the Hands used was to equalize the abilities of the fighters.

I still think the theory that it was really just a kid playing with toys, like in the opening movie od the first SSB, would explain everything. The kid could just have been using his imagination to give the characters the attacks they had. That would also explain why no one ever accually dies after being hit with an almost certianly fatal attack like being hit with a sword or fire.

The thing is, the hands are canon characters. They appeared in a Kirby game (name escapes me, but it's for a portable).

yeah, it's kirby and the amazing mirror. also if you suck up a hand when you beat it, kirby becomes "smash kirby" and it alows you to go smash bros. on the enemies in the game. They are the boss of level 9, candy constalation

Maybe that intro movie was just a way of metaphorically presenting the events that happened.
