Rex: It's beetle, not beatle. Beatle refers to a band. And I don't think Spinys are koopas. They can curl into balls. Koopas can't.

Oh, I wasn't even there.
Of course not. none of the beetles are Koopas. They may be Turtley, but not Koopas.

Huh? Spinies are definitely related to koopas. Spiketops and buzzy beetles are the bugs that kind of look like spinies. Also, spinies are still the ones that turn into balls which a lot of other koopas don't appear to be able to do. But some other koopas like koopatrolls can turn into balls or at least I think I remember them being able to, not that it matters too much... Spinies are related to koopas but just like other koopa sub-classes they have their own unique abilities which for them is being able to roll up into a ball. Apparently Hammer brother's also have a similar ability and I'm actually not too sure about koopatrolls. Sumo brothers stomp the ground and create lightning, Electrikoopas can use electricity...and so on and so on....

Well lakitus (definatly koopas) throw spinys, so there must be some connection...

Not necessarily. Oftentimes Spinies are referred to as Lakitu's "pet."

But they do resemble them slightly, maybe they're a distant ancestor... Or not.

Could be, but there's no way to prove it either way unless someone finds something official that says they're Koopas.

Find proof that spinies are koopas? That's easy. Listen, all spinies are koopas. Then there are the spike tops and the buzzy beetles which are both related to eachother. The spike tops and buzzy beetles look similar to the spinies but they are not related to them. I'm not sure how closely rlated spinies are to lakitus but they are related somewhat because they are both koopas. Also, I don't think I've ever seen a spiketop or a buzzy beetle roll into a ball :/ *goes to get the proof*

PMTTYD Log/tattle:
"A spike-covered member of the Koopa Tribe with extremely high Defense. It cannot be damaged when it rolls into a ball."
"That's a Spiny. Basically a spike-covered Koopa. Ugh! Looks painful! These things have such high defense that you can't even hurt them when they roll up. So, when they go back to normal, do all the damage you can, and do it quickly! If you flip them over, their Defense drops to 0. THAT'S the time to take them out. Jumping on them is just plain stupid, so try using a POW Block or some other item."

Saying something basically is something does not mean it is something, and it could be a member of the Koopa Tribe without actually being a Koopa. I've also never seen a Koopa roll into a ball, so that argument doesn't get you far.

What are you saying, if spinies are koopas, then they are koopas that can roll into balls. Unless you were just saying you've never fought the spinies from the paper Mario games, cause I see those things roll up into balls all the time. And it says that a spiny is "Basically a spike-covered Koopa" in the tattle. Also, Hammer bros can apparently roll into balls as well.

Also, I don't think I've ever seen a spiketop or a buzzy beetle roll into a ball :/ *goes to get the proof* That's what I mean. And since when did Hammer Bros. roll into a ball?

Well technically those hammer bros in ML:PIT could go into balls, but only if hit with a hammer.

Spike tops and Buzzy Beetles aren't koopas, Spinies are koopas.
