Yes, but in paper mario they had four-legs, so it was probobly a graphical error.

I don't think so......Besides, we don't take a lot of paper Mario graphics too seriously. Mario's eyes in that one were just solid black ovals. Not to mention everyone and just about everything is paper thin in those games. I think that all of the seemingly four leged spike tops and buzzy beetles are due to what I like to call, ....................("spriter lazziness")....I think that also goes for bony beetles.

As for the spike tops haveing six-legs thing, the 3rd leg was most likely one from the other side.

I don't think any of those are a far side leg, or else you wouldn't be able to see part of it when it moved up.

Besides, we don't take a lot of paper Mario graphics too seriously. You can't deny that with polygon limitations removed, the character designers were free to make the characters as true-to-life as possible. And about the legginess of Spike Tops: They have 4 legs, but also huge claws on each of them, which may look confusing.

I'm saying that all characters change. The piranha plant went from green to red, and the spike tops went from looking like they had six legs to being revealed to have 4.

If they wanted spike top to look like it had four legs they could have just done it like they did buzzy beetle. I don't think those are claws. Perhaps the buzzy beetles and spike tops have a pair of legs they don't use all the time, and they only reveal the 3rd pair when they need more grip like when climbing walls. The spike tops in Super Mario world are drwn with the 3rd pair shown and they climb walls in that one but not in others where the legs are not clearly shown.

Buzzy beatles climb walls in SMB3, and they don't have 6-legs.

Maby you just can't see them because they have a bigger shell.

I don't think they have six legs...

Why?

Because they appeared in 3 games. They only look like they have six legs in 1. 2>1.

But the buzzy beetles also apered to have 4 legs in the same game where spike tops apered to have 6. And sinse a spike top is just a buzzy beetle with a spike on top, it seems a bad idea to rule out the possibility that both creatures have the ability to hide the 3rd pair of legs.

When were spike tops revealed to be related to buzzy beatles? I might be wrong but I think it was paper mario, the same game spike tops were revealed to have four legs.

I think it was paper mario too. But it could havew been earlier. Although having them reveled as relatives in a latter game should meen that they were also related in the older games unless the older game says otherwise.

But since it wasn't revealed untill paper mario, the developers must not have known they were relitives when they made SMW. And when they made paper mario they made sure that they looked like buzzy beatles.

What? So your saying the developers didn't even know what they were doing? I don't know about that......

It's just that they probobly hadn't desided that spike tops and buzzys were related when they made that game. When they desided that they were related they gave the spike tops four legs instead of six.

Here's a little something I thought up last night, since boom-booms seem so similar to armored koopas with only slight differences, perhaps they're a hybrid of an armored koopa and some other sort of koopa (sledge bro?). That would explain their rarity.

I wouldn't say they're rare, I'd say they are the elite troops and are used as guards for important places. Fighting with the rest of the troops would just be beneath them.
But as for the hybrid thing, Sledge Bros are just giant hammer bros, who are the same species as regular koopas. The spiked shell doesn't nessesaraly mean Boom-Booms are related to bowser and co, because Shells can be detached. They could have been specialy bred to get the ultimate koopa though.
