Have you ever seen that Mythbusters episode where it takes thousands of balloons to lift a kid up into the air? Well, that's helium, but hydrogen isn't much lighter. It would take quite a bit more than that. I assume there's some propulsion system lifting the Yoshi up, maybe magic.

Hydrogen is about four times lighter than helium. And it does look like there is propulsion - namely, the Yoshi is pushing the air downwards to rise. And yes, Mythbusters is awesome.
Hm - while I was thinking about another reason to add to the above, I thought of "Yoshis are rather light". And they are, since Yoshi's typically a lightweight in the Mario spinoffs. But Yoshi routinely weighs in the top of the list of Smashers - he's fifth-heaviest in SSB64 and SSBM, while in Brawl he's as heavy as Wario in a tie for 8th. What's up with that?

Well that just makes the spinoffs kinda weird, because how could a lightwieight Yoshi carry Mario through whole SMW stages and it not seem like he's being crushed?

Yoshi in Mario spin-offs might be a different, younger Yoshi, such as the one that appeared in Yoshi's Story, while Melee and Brawl's is the Yoshi from Yoshi's Island or Super Mario World. Oh wait...the winning theme is from Yoshi's Story...well, it's still the best I've got.

Maybe Yoshi went on Jenny Craig for Brawl

Then Jenny Craig must work like crap.

lol kingkoopa, you got that mixed up Well they also have Yoshi's Island DS theme, so music doesn't really matter. But the yoshi in YI is a different one than YS, because all of the Yoshis in YI were brainwashed at the beginning of Story. Unless YS is a prequel to YI, unlike what most people think.

It's not a prequel, because Baby Bowser doesn't know who Mario is in Yoshi's Island (as he shouldn't...he was just born), but he does know who he is in Yoshi's Story. And I know that there are other music tracks, but I thought that because it's specifically his winning theme it might suggest a connection.

I don't see why Yoshi has to be heavy to carry Mario; he just needs really strong leg bones, which is very possible considering how they help flutter and prevent fall damage.

Muscles weigh a lot and the ones in the leg (or very top of the leg...heh) are the strongest and biggest in the body. Not to mention food doesn't always instantly become an egg, like in Super Mario World. In that game, Yoshi's bigger than Mario, making it reasonable that he's heavy, and in most of the spin-offs, he's smaller.

He is a medium sized character yet fast in spin-off games

Not always. Sometimes he's medium and other times he's light. And in Brawl, he's heavy. Maybe it's his various stages of digestion.

The way I see it, there are two reasons why Yoshi is a middleweight in the more recent sports games: - Compared to the increasing number of characters lighter than he is, he's more medium than light.
- The weight classes in Mario Kart nowadays are less based on weight and more based on who fits in what kart.

yeah cause I'm sure Wario and Petey Pirahna shouldn't be in the same weight class

Well, they're both heavy, even if one is heavier than the other. A better example would be King Boo or Rosalina, who are light but are treated as heavy ones.

Yeah Rosalina is very light but very big

I think one you get past a certain weight/size the character is just automatically grouped as heavy. King Boo always confused me the most. I mean sure he's large, but shouldn't he technically weigh nothing?

As Toomai said, it's more to do with size than weight.
