VentI like that idea. It's simple, and it works, although one has to question, how would it benefit Mario to switch into 2D? It would just limit him. Not necessarily. I can count several times where going 2D has helped me immensely. All of them speed-running tactics, but that's neither here nor there. Plus, there's also the fact that there tends to be places where Mario can only go to if he's in 2D. The Switch-on platforms at the beginning of 1-2 come to mind.

Mario can't interact with the rest of the world if he is always in 3-D. It would kind of be like if Luigi wished to be more popular than Mario and everyone dissapeared because no one likes Luigi (lol jk. I'm actually a pretty big Luigi fan, but I wanted to offer an example)

I just want to point out that while time is generally referred to as 'the' 4th dimension, it isn't necessarily 'the' 4th spacial dimension. Its merely the 4th dimension that we can perceive. As I understand it, spacial dimensions are something different from time. And though its pretty much impossible for us to even imagine what such dimensions might look like, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and on spacial dimensions exist mathematically. But like I said, we can't even imagine or visualize or perceive them, and even if they exist in reality as more than just mathematical concepts, it would be difficult if not impossible for us to know about them, just as a being who has only known 2 dimensions would not have any clue of what 3 dimensions looked like, or how a 1dimensional being would never be able to understand 2 or 3 dimensions. On another note, just because we can't understand 4+ spacial dimensions visually, doesn't mean their mathematical existence isn't useful to us. It also doesn't mean they can't be visually represented in 3 dimensions, after all, a cube can be represented in 2 dimensions right? For more on n-dimension absurdity, just look up hypercubes.
