Game Title: The Marios
Genre: 3D Platformer
Basic Premise: A nostalgic and self-referential humorous romp down Mario memory lane as Nintendo's star meets alternate incarnations of himself and his friends from other media in a lighthearted and wacky sendup to the many portrayals of Mario throughout the years.
Story
Once again, Bowser had kidnapped Peach! So Mario, as per usual, trekked out to his castle to stop him. Everything went just fine, until after defeating his arch-foe, our hero accidentally fell into a warp zone and found himself in a bizarre parallel dimension to his own!
"Hey paisano!" he heard a voice shout, only to discover he was being addressed by a man who looked remarkably like himself, who eyed him curiously, "Your name wouldn't be... Mario?"
Mario only nodded, noting this man- despite his similar appearance- was a lot more talkative than he was.
"Great garlic! I don't know what's goin' on, but somehow there's another ME here! Come on- Let's see if Princess Toadstool might know anything about this!"
And so Mario and Mario went on their way through the strange new land, unaware that Bowser had also found his doppelganger, and was already making plans to take advantage of the situation.
What lies ahead? Find out in The Marios!
Playable Characters
Although multiple universes will be showcased, for simplicity's sake there will be only three playable characters, each with unique abilities and strengths.
Mario - The Nintendo original! He plays as he would in SM64 and Galaxy, with no noticeable tweaks or differences to the standard 3D formula. True to form, Mario's got a perfect balance of speed and strength.
Cartoon Mario - Dic's Mario relies more on bizarre items and gadgets, from wrenches and plungers to robot suits and super sushi. His play style is the fastest, but he's also the weakest. Joins at the beginning of world 2.
Movie Mario - The big heavy brawler, this tough guy is slow but a powerhouse against hordes of enemies. Plays a lot like a beat-'em-up character. Joins at the beginning of world 3.
Worlds
1. The Mushroom Kingdom - The original Mario's old stomping grounds. Expect a normal and familiar environment here.
2. Cartoon Mushroom Kingdom - A strange new land ruled by "Princess Toadstool" under attack by the costume-wearing loon "King Koopa." Divided into wacky themed mini-regions that abruptly shift into each other. Upon arrival, Cartoon Mario is unlocked as playable.
3. Movie Mushroom Kingdom - A dystopian city ruled by a humanoid King Koopa, who's captured an alternate counterpart of Princess Daisy. Movie Mario unlocked upon arrival.
-----
At this point in the story, the three Marios have teamed up, but so have the three Bowsers, who plot to take over all worlds by joining forces.
-----
4. Comic Mushroom Kingdom - Based on the old Valient comics, with such forgotten characters as the Mushroom King, Wooster, etc. The Marios and Bowsers continue their battle, racing through each world, and again get entangled in the goings-on of the new universe.
5. Anime Mushroom Kingdom - A world strikingly similar to Mario's own, but with some notable differences, such as the Mario Bros.' differing origin story, a wise old wizard, and Prince Haru of the neighboring Flower Kingdom. The three Bowsers arrive attempting to enlist their counterpart's aid, but he's too busy planning his would-be wedding to be bothered by it. Thus, the Marios must rescue this universe's Peach and defeat its Bowser while their progress is impeded by the other Bowsers at the same time!
6. Manga Mushroom Kingdom - Based on the Super Mario-kun manga series, the continuing ongoing Japanese comic featuring an exaggerated chibi design for its cast and lighthearted shenanigans for all! Again, our heroes and villains both arrive and the Marios must fight against the Bowsers as well as this world's usual antagonists.
7. Hotel Mushroom Kingdom - A bizarre and abstract dimension featuring a maniacally laughing Bowser and some off-model inhabitants. Will feature at least a few minigames based on Hotel Mario's gameplay style.
Final Stage - Bowsers' Castle (Note the plural possessive) Between dimensions, all seven Bowsers finally join forces and decide to combine all their armies and resources to conquer each of their worlds. With moral support from their own counterparts, as well as multiple versions of Luigi, Peach, Toad, and their other allies, the Marios rush in to defeat each version of their nemesis and save the universes!
----------
I expect the tone to be very tongue-in-cheek and comedic, nothing overly dark or sinister. In the end, it's going to be full of affectionate parody at some of the more ridiculous aspects of works based on the Mario games, simultaneously highlighting the things we loved and the things we thought were rather silly.
I'm well aware Nintendo would never ever make such a game, much less ever publicly acknowledge the derivative continuities of Mario in a mainstream work, but it's a fun idea to think about, no?
