*wipes splattered tomato from face*
Kay, in an effort to generate some really real and redundantly redundant discussion in the ways of logic again, I've been reminded of a true skull-scratcher that's been bothering me for a while now:
Are certain characters related, like fanon tends to believe, or just really good/bad chums?
Like, is Rosalina Peach's great-grandmama? Or, are Mario and Wario very distant cousins? Is Donkey Kong a literal monkey's uncle to Diddy?
To simplify things, I think we'll just go over one family connection at a time, then when we've reached a consensus, go on to the next one down the line. Of course, we'll also negate those family connections that Nintendo's already confirmed. (eg. Toad & Toadette are siblings, Wario & Waluigi are not.)
1st on the list: Peach and Rosalina

Roalina can't be Peach's ancestor; she went on the coment with the Luma when she was like 10. And from the old Super Mario Adventures comic, which still has perfect canonicity IMO (as a prequel to SMW), states that Mario & Wario are not related, just childhood friends, if I remember correctly.

True, Rosalina said in her story that she had a brother. Great-Aunt is a much better answer.
By the way, the only reason why I brought up Mario and Wario was because certain people do, in fact, believe them to be cousins, and I just wanted you guys' opinions on it.

About Peach and Rosalina: The area shown during Rosalina's backstory pretty much proves she was the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom centuries ago (probably explaining her "princess" title). I guess that her brother became the kingdom's prince, married someone, etc. So IMO she's Peach's ancestor.
About Mario and Wario: While I don't see the Super Mario-kun comics as being canon, they did have a huge impact on the games (alongside the anime, which is also not canon) and shouldn't be so easily ignored. It was first said there that Wario was Mario's childhood friend. Mario Superstar Baseball claims it again (but it says it's according to Wario's sayings). The Mario vs. Wario comic even follows that idea and theorizes that Mario was a bully to Wario in their childhood, explaining why Wario would've taken over Mario's castle later in his life. The "they are cousin" thing just comes from Nintendo Power.

Although the whole Peach/Rosalina relation thing was never stated directly. During the development of SMG she they were originally meant to be related. Which is why they look so much alike. A remnant of this scrapped story is the fact that it seem Rosalina was the mushroom princess long ago.
As for Mario and Wario, Nintendo Power is the only source that says they're cousins. (and we all know that's not very accurate)

Well now, don't go talking about Nintendo Power like that. They know that what they say isn't canon, they just like to state their personal theories.

Just why should it be canon? Because it fits perfectly with modern Mario storylines, unlike the Super Mario Super Show/the Anime OVA/the Nintendo Comic System Comics stuff.

One other thing I just thought of. You guys said Rosalina could be Peaches great aunt, but I think it might be a little farther back then that. Lets say the average span of a generation is 25 years (just to keep things simple.) So if the comet only comes around every 100 years, that would be 4 generations. Assuming the comet has appeared more than once, we can just add 4 generations for each appearance. So at the very least, Rosalina is Peach's great great aunt. At the most......well just keep putting the word great in front of that title

Great ancestor. We'll just go with that.
Okay, what do you guys think about Donkey and Diddy?

I remember reading somewhere that Donkey Kong was Diddy's uncle. Then again, I also read that Funky Kong was Diddy's dad...

Diddy has already been officialy stated to be Donkey's nephew (by Rare), but Nintendo eventually changed it to Diddy being DK's best friend. I guess they thought it was too much nonsense to have a chimpanzee (with a tail...) being the nephew of a gorilla, even for the Mario universe.
So, basically, it depends of the version you're following. The DK canon really depends. Rare's version: Cranky is DK's father, Diddy is DK's nephew, Tiny is Dixie's little sister and King K. Rool and his alternate selves are the same person ; Nintendo's version: Cranky is DK's grandfather, Diddy is DK's best friend, Tiny has no relation to Dixie (or is her big sister ?) and King K. Rool is the brother of Kaptain K. Rool while K. Roolenstein is their cousin. Really, it depends of what canon you want to follow.

The Rare version makes more sense, but sense Rare no longer makes DK games, the Nintendo one is probably the new canon.

Nintendo's canon <<<<<<< Rare's canon
I mean, having K. Rool being 3 seperate people?!

K. Rool is criminally insane. Honestly, I thought that was obvious, Nintendo.

I mean, have they even watched the DKC cartoon before?

The DKC cartoons aimed in Japan and were succesful, actually.
I think that Nintendo thought that Bowser and Ganondorf were enough "Nintendo main villains who keep coming back" so they made K. Rool, Kaptain and Roolestein three different characters.

Well that's not very smart because sometimes the villains are the best parts of a story. Like Bamtan. Do we really watch Batman for Bruce Wayne dodging paparazzi so he can don his cape and go out to fight crime while angsting about his parents? Well sometimes, but that's not the point We watch Batman for the villains! Like Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Rhas Al Ghul, Red Hood, and Scarface! Yeah so the point of my rant was that Nintendo should have memorable villains, like Bowser, Ganon, K. Rool, Black Shadow, Giovanni, Ridley, ect. Taking away one of the best ones is anti-marketable too, so I don't see the point.

Luigi is Daisy's brother, and as such the rightful prince of Sarasaland.
Because Luigi/Daisy is overrated.
