Who here accepts the theory that Mario and Luigi's last names are actually "Mario"? I do. I know that the Nintendo of America products (i.e. the cartoons and movie) are a bit shaky canon-wise (to say the least), but technically, aren't they right? If they're the "Mario Bros.", wouldn't their names be 'Mario Mario' and 'Luigi Mario'? I also accept the theory that Mario and Luigi originally hailed from Brooklyn, New York. The games even tie-in with it: Mario Bros. (1983) chronicles the days that Mario and Luigi spent working as plumbers in Brooklyn, culminating in them fighting off Bowser's forces, who have all but conquered the Mushroom Kingdom and are attempting to now invade Earth. Super Mario Bros. is set immediately after the previous game. Mario and Luigi, while forcing back Bowser's troops in the Brooklyn Sewers, accidently stumble through the gateway that they were using to enter our world, a Warp Pipe. Everything after that, as they say, is history. But, now that I'm done rambling, what do you guys think?

A Toad says to Luigi in SM64DS: "Continue like that and we'll soon call you the Super Luigi Bros.!" Which leads to believe that they're called "Mario Bros." simply because Mario is the famous one.
And although the theory of Mario coming from Brooklyn, with Mario Bros.' events and stuff, is interesting, nothing actually supports it and no Japanese media ever mentionned anything from Earth (although Mario Bros.' sewers were BASED on NYC's). Plus, considering the Metroid series, the Mario series and the Kirby series happen at the same time (due to Samus' roles in Super Mario RPG and in Kirby's Dream Land 3 - it's more than just a cameo appearance if you can interact with the character) then Earth is frozen (and humanity on the planet may not exist anymore). Even if it wasn't, Mario would still be more futuristic than just a chubby guy in overrals.
Theories/constatations aside, it happens that Donkey Kong (the game) happens on Mario's planet (according to the Game Boy version, and to the DKC series). The original games may have been linking Mario to Earth (nothing proves in the arcade version of DK that the construction site wasn't on Earth, and, well, you have the Mario Bros. -> Super Mario Bros. plot) but Nintendo did everything to re-write it since Yoshi's Island.

Well, first of all, I think that Toad was making a joke. If we assume that naming conventions are still the same in the Marioverse as they are in our world (which I believe they are), then you'd almost have to deduce that "Mario" is Mario and Luigi's last name. Since there's nothing to really refute this in the games and several adaptations stating it, I tend to accept this theory.
Secondly, I know it's anyone's guess as to whether or not the Mario Bros. actually came from Brooklyn. But, I believe that they did, simply because the theory is already so widely accepted. Cartoons and bad movie aside, both Charles Martinet and the Official SM64 Player's Guide think that they did. That's enough to sell me on the matter, even if the games and Mr. Miyamoto have kept silent about it.

That's enough to sell me on the matter, even if the games and Mr. Miyamoto have kept silent about it. Charles Martinet was told to do the voice of an Italian from Brooklyn (his first role was in Mario Teaches Typing, don't forget it) so it seems obvious for him. And anything "Official" Player's Guide that isn't Japanese (and thus directly made by Nintendo of Japan) isn't a good source at all. The only things that actually support it are, well, bad cartoons, bad movies and bad games (Mario Teaches Typing, etc) (and the only thing that was seen in Japan through all this stuff is the "The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach" movie). And, Luigi signs only with his first name. The only characters to have a last name in the Japanese version are Peach Toadstool and Elvin Gadd. Not that I think Mario and Luigi don't have last names, but if they do then we don't know it (yet).

But, who's to say that material originating from the NoA adaptations doesn't hold some merit, as long as it doesn't contradict the games? I'm more willing to believe that they're called the Mario Bros. because that's their given name, rather than them merely being called that because Mario's more popular. The Starshade Bros. (Sgt. Starshade and Gen. Starshade) from M&L:SS obviously have a last name, so why not the Mario Bros.? Until Nintendo of Japan decides to stop being lazy and fill in the gaps themselves, I'll accept some of the ideas conceived by Nintendo of America as canon, since there's nothing to contradict them, as of yet. Also, sorry to nitpick, but Martinet's first time as Mario's voice was in Mario Teaches Typing 2.

Erm... actually, didn't that Mario anime movie show Mario as from Earth? You know, Great Mission to Save Princess Peach? That's a (albeit as non canon as the movies and TV show) bit of japanese media, and it showed him working in a grocery store...

If the american cartoons shouldn't be considered canon, then what makes you think that a story where Mario works at a grocery store while Prince Toadstool tries to save her while stuck as a dog. As for what 1-UP said, you have my support 100% on EVERYTHING that you have said so far.

1upWhile I believe that Mario was born, and lived in the Mushroom Kingdom. The only thing I have to contradict your theory would be Yoshi's Island, but that could easily be worked around... Until we see Mario's Childhood in an Official Game, we can't say for sure. KoopalmierWhile I do have some minor disagreements on this subject, overall, we have incredibly similar theories. So, all I can say is, "^this^".

That's a (albeit as non canon as the movies and TV show) bit of japanese media, and it showed him working in a grocery store... It looks anything but canon. Although it and Super Mario-kun actually had an impact on the games later, it's still as canon as the American cartoons. Nintendo of America is just porting these games to America. Anything they say that isn't confirmed by Nintendo of Japan or simply contradicts what NoJ said can surely be considered as theories, but not as canon fact. Look, the Star Sprites are called "spirits of the Cobalt Star" in the Spanish version of M&L3. It doesn't contradict anything, so should we consider it as being canon ?

...Maybe we can assume that's where Elder Princess Shroob got the idea for her disguise?

KoopalmierI don't see why not, if it's not contradicting anything. It adds more flavor to the Marioverse and fills in some gaps. Just because George Lucas doesn't write the Star Wars novels doesn't make them non-canon. I think the same line of thinking can be applied here. There are more minds behind the Marioverse than just Mr. Miyamoto. Sure, he has the final word on the subject, but he hasn't refuted any of the theories, so I'll accept them until he does. In short, as long as it fits in with the games, I believe it's canon (until proven otherwise).

WHICH is exactly why I fully believe in the "Mario was born in the Mushroom Kingdom but his family moved to Brooklyn because of all the dangerous Koopas and the Bros came back to the Mushroom Kingdom by accident when Koopas started to flood the sewers" Theory.
*GASP!*

Well, I mostly agree with Koop on the issue of Mario's home world.
Though we shouldn't take only Japanese sources as canon though, as NoA has helped more than harmed (my opinion, mind you).

I mean, the Japanese version already established that Mario was born on the Mushroom Earth(Yoshi's Island) and, as for now, always lived there (Donkey Kong GB). The theory that he comes from ANOTHER PLANET, maybe on ANOTHER TIME PERIOD, isn't just some small theory to fill an unimportant hole.

@ mariobro364
That's funny, because in my fan-fic, that I'm currently developing, I was going to have Mario and Luigi's real parents (who were subsequently killed in the Great War with the Koopas) send them off in a basket down a river when they're infants, very much like Moses in the Bible. The river would lead to a Warp Pipe that transports the Bros. to Brooklyn, where they would be discovered and adopted by an Italian family. They would then inherit their adoptive father's plumbing business.
So, essentially, they'd be born in the Mushroom Kingdom, but raised in New York (in my fan-fic, anyway).
... Yeah, I have a little too much time on my hands... -_-

I have a similar problem.
I have way too much time to think of Fan Fics, but never follow through with actually writing them.
Like recently, I got this amazing idea of a crossover between Lilo & Stitch and Paper Mario, ala "Edventures of the Thousand Year Door."
However, I keep trying to find some way to put it off, so I wouldn't actually have to make the effort of typing.
Random Bystander: What're you doing right now, then?
Me: *throws pizza box in bystander's face* Go 'way.

1up, I'm intrigued, POST IT HERE! I shall, once I get it started! Right now, I'm pretty set on "Chronicles for the Mushroom Kingdom" (CotMK for short) being its title. I was originally going to call it "The Epic Mario Bros.", but it sounded too similar to Epic Mickey and a bit silly, after I thought about it for a while. It's basically going to be an epic re-tooling of the Marioverse, with a high fantasy feel to it (ala Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia). But, it's not going to become so dark that it betrays the source material (i.e. cursing or excessive violence). I'm making it to basically prove that there is a lot potential for a deep plot in the Mario series and that it, indeed, can be taken seriously if done correctly. There will be no original characters or locations. Everything that I use in the story will have been used in an official piece of Mario media at some point. In fact, you guys seem to definitely be a group of savvy Mario fans. I would love to bounce ideas off you guys, if you'll allow me. Where can I make a thread where I can discuss ideas for my fan-fic (not to be confused with actually posting my fan-fic)?
