When you mean the result of a Super Star/Starman/Rainbow Star? I mean, in some games you can be unharmed by lava, while in others it still kills you. What would happen if, I dunno, a universe ended while someone who was currently invincible was still in it, ala Super Paper Mario? Fate worse than death?

Hmmm, I guess that invincibility only goes so far since you can still die while using it. Just look at SMG. Even while invicible, a black hole still kills you.

Well, it depends. Invincibility = maximum physical power-up. If someone had a Super Star while the world ended, he'd be perfectly fine... until the item stopped working.
I can't remember, in which games does invincibility still lets you die by lava ?

Yoshi's Island is one of them.

A black hole or a "bottomless" pit still kill you because the effect of the power-up would eventually end and the black hole would eventually destroy you, or you'd eventually reach the bottom of the pit.

I think SMW lets you die in lava too. I believe it was a Vanilla Dome level. Bottomless pits kill you because no matter how invincible you are, you can't climb out.

Every platformer has you die by falling into lava, even while invincible. I always thought of the lava as being deep enough that Mario sinks in and dies as soon as the invincibility dies out.

Or gets swallowed by the lava and soon emerges with nothing more than a fire on his butt. Toon physics to the max

Well, considering the fact that in the 3D platformers he does no more than skim the surface of the lava, if he sunk, then... He's sunk.

Yeah, I think I remember that if you used Metal Wario the Lava would act like quicksand and your already poor jumping ability would become the jumping ability of a rock

AHHHHH HA HA HA HA HA!!! Ahhhh. that was funny. But I'm not sur it's duration. It might be invincibility up to a point, because if I remember correctly, there were a few other things that could hurt you in a star. Either way, same effect.

You can still get crushed by moving walls. If I remember correctly it makes you do the rapid-item decelleration. (You instantly go down one on the power up chain and then become regular sized Mario before you even get a chance to move. and then you die. Unless small Mario is small enough to fit in the area

Exactly! You can still be crushed to death or run out of time during a star!

That reminds me. What would the logic be behind running out of time on a course? Ignoring Brawl In The Family's explanation, (which is here, btw: www.brawlinthefamily.com/?p=276 ) what do you think happens? Does Bowser set a giant bomb that Mario defuses at the end of each level? Sending reinforcements that overpower him? If not, what?

That is a good question. I don't think the timers are canon though.

I say it's a mere gameplay element. It's in all platformers.
