I don't think they actually kill him, they probably just send him out of the level, and the loss of a life is just a penalty set by Nintendo.
Besides, they clearly have emotion as they are occasionally grateful to Mario.

Yes they do seem to show some emotion as they can be happy, angry, demanding, scared, grateful, etc. But they seem to be selfish (just like a lot of Mario characters) as they will only give you stars if you do what they want.

They could be, but if the Gearmos existed on ME than it would have to be in a place where Mario hasn't visited yet.
