In the Toho series, it's said that if a human gains a lot of power, he becomes a yokai (that's the case of Alice Margatroid, actually). I don't know if this comes from Japanese mythology or is made-up, but it explains Rosalina's case fairly well either way. It also explains why she doesn't age.
Yup, I just used something from another, totally unrelated series to explain something in the Mario series. Problem ?
And, well, she became the "mother" of all Lumas. It makes sense that she'd have started growing stronger and stronger over the time.

I guess she gained all of that power so that she could watch over the Lumas forever, I mean, she could be the "chosen one," or whatever. But here's a question, how did the Lumas know about their "mother" coming for them on a comet (which technically was true, because she became their "mother" on a comet)? It must have been destiny, or whatever.

Maybe she's a "chosen one". Maybe it's because she watched over a Luma. Maybe it's because she asked Miyamoto.
I think that she gained all that power due to being around Lumas for a long time. Just by teaming with a Luma, Mario could breathe in space and use a new attack.
