The title says it all, folks. Who are Wario and Waluigi? What are they? Clones? Evil twins? Really mean relatives?
Ok, so here's my take on the whole situation. If we're taking the comic books into account here, Mario and Wario were once friends when they were growing up in the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Mario had the tendency to bully Wario whenever they played together (even though he didn't seem to be aware of it). So because of this, Wario became very bitter and angry towards Mario and the evil made him deformed and demented (hence the pointy ears and such).
As for Waluigi, as it states in the Mario Tennis 64 manual (I believe that's where it was) Waluigi had always watched Luigi from the shadows ever since they were young and the jealousy slowly did to him what the anger did to Wario.
And yes, I do actually believe that they're brothers.
Ok, your guys turn.

Yeah, I think they're either brothers or close relatives. They share similar physical and personality traits, so a family relation is suggested. I think Waluigi spent a lot of time with Luigi when they were younger the way Wario did with Mario.

I personally don't think Waluigi even exists until he gets his own game. The makers where really streching it with ANOTHER poser charecter.
I'm trying to make this story thats really sad about why Wario is so mean and junk. It all takes place in Brooklyn when wario and Mario where kids....
And thats about as far as I got. ;D
If Waluigi is real then he's Wario's little partner in crime.
He just dresses like Wario to be more like him.

That's another thing--did Wario and Waluigi come from the Mushroom Dimension, settle on earth, and return to the Mushroom Dimension or did they originate in our dimension?

If you consider the comics as cannon then both the Wario and Mario seem to have originated in the Mushroom World. They were best friends when they were little and would play games that involved things like plucking turnips (or in Wario's case, Piranha Plants) and flattening coins under Thwomps (or in Wario's case, flattening himself).

Oh, Mario is from the Mushroom Kingdom and Wario is from earth. They just met as kids in Brooklyn and became friends.

But it's been made pretty clear that they actually met in the Mushroom Kingdom. I'll look for scans of the comic.

Yeah met in the Mushroom Kingdom, because Wario took over Mario's castle.

So, I'm assuming you're ignoring the comic then?

I wouldn't know what comic your refering to.
But that's what it says in the SML2 instruction booklet.

Oh, oops! For some reason I thought you said they "met on Earth". Sorry about that, I totally mis-read.
The comic is called Mario Vs. Wario. I used to have it but it got water spilled on it a few years back and my mom threw it away ~_~. I'll try and find some scans, though.

This raises a problem. In the comic the two are young boys in the Mushroom Kingdom. But in Yoshi's Island the Bros. leave the Kingdom as babies. So did Mario return to the Mushroom Dimension before he and Luigi found that infamous warp pipe?

Here! Great! My story time!
As the Bros. where delivered safely to their parents the family lived happily for a short time.
Almost all traces of danger was gone. But something was stirring. Something evil...
Over many years after a battle the Koopa's emerge. They always do. Not necessarily stronger but they do.
So anyway the Mario family was having a great time.
Realizing that the Koopa's would come another day, their parents made the hardest decision they could ever do. They knew that their children would be better off on earth. It would be safer than to grow up living with an uncertain tension.
We can only assume they where left on somebody’s porch or in an orphanage in Brooklyn.
There they grew up, and this is where the movie comes in.

I pretty much agree with that. They were raised for several years (probably until about the age of four or five) and then transported to Earth for safety until they reached maturity. I think they were probably sent to Italy first, though. Then they could have moved to Brooklyn later on.

They might've even grown up in Italy and traveled to the United States as grown immigrants for the freedom and whatnot.

Ok, detail:
Mario's parents where Italien. They left the bros. in Brooklyn when they where between 6 months and 2 years. The bros. should be too young to remember the Mushroom World. That's why they where sent there.

The comics showed them significantly older than two years. And if their parents were Italian then how could they have been borne in the Mushroom Kingdom?

I don't get what you mean.

Mario and Luigi were born in the Mushroom Kingdom (SMW2), so unless Italy just happens to be in the Mushroom World then their parents can't be Italian. Or did you mean their adoptive parents?
