[glow=yellow,4,0]Warning repetition: this topic covers material in Chapter 7 of Super Paper Mario.[/glow]
Okay. If you've read my fanfic JoT, you know I wrote in a place where the dead gather. Well, it appears there is a realm like that in SPM: the Underwhere. People are sent there when "their games are over". There also appears to be a heaven-like place called the Overthere, which is in the same world.
The questions are these: Considering the nature of the worlds of SPM, do these places truly exist, and are they linked to all other universes if they do? And if not, then how much of the realm is real and how much is a massive fourth-wall joke?

All the worlds in super paper mario are each in different dimentions. The underwhere and the overthere seem to be connected to all of them. Other nintendo universes aren't connected to them tho, just the mario ones. On a related note, flipside and flopside are in between dimentions, like the woods between the world in the chronicals of narnia.

Okay...so now we're talking about sub-dimensions? Because the gap between Flipside and Lineland is a whole lot smaller than the gap between Hyrule and Corneria...

The nintendo universes have to be conected(that would explain all the cammeos), but each universe has it's own sub-dimentions.

Well, the Underwhere and Overthere do seem to be heaven and hell, as "The Underwhere is where people from any dimension go when they receive a Game Over". Also, they go to Overthere if they redeem themselves r something.

Luigi said "everyone run out of extra lives sometime" But isn't impossible to acctuly have multipul lives, or was he talking about 1-up mushrooms and life shrooms?

The biggest question I have is whether the talk about extra lives is a fourth wall joke. If it isn't a joke, then green mushrooms really do save you from death. If it's a joke, then the extra-lives talk can be discounted and Luigi just says "Everyone dies sometime" or something.

Well they don't bring you back to life per say, they just heal you from the brink of death or something like that.

In Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach brings Mario back to life after he had been dead for at least a couple of days. I know that's not anywhere close to being canon but it was funny so I just thought I'd mention it...>_>

Altough I haven't played the game yet ( ) Somthing tells me that the whole forth-wall braking thing is a bit of a running joke thoughout the entire thing. Having your game be over seems to be a way of saying that you die, at least in the Mushroom World. Kind of like how we say somone passes away. Weather anyone accuallly relizes that it's all just a video game is still unknown though...

Yeah, the fourth wall is a big running joke throughout the game. It even jokes about being told which buttons to press.

The censor is becoming too powerful!!! It's got a mind of it's own!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES PEOPLE!!!
@clive Koopa: The underwhere is basically the mushroom worlds version of the underworld.

Within the underwhere, though, I don't quite get Shaydes. Is it that Mushroom World citizens turn into Shaydes some time after they die, or do they change instantly. Or is the Shayde like, their soul, hence why Mario didn't become one, as he wasn't ACTUALLY dead.

Hmm...well, maybe only Flipside/Flopside residents become Shaydes. They look kinda similar. Plus, if the Mushroom Kingdom is in a different subdimension (which makes sense), maybe they have their own (unseen) afterland.
