...then why is the sky blue?
The only reason Earth's sky is blue is because when sunlight enters our atmosphere, it is refracted such that only the blue light enters our eyes. If space is full of air, then there'd be no refraction, the light wouldn't even scatter, and the sky would be a starry black!

Um...mabey there isn't very much air? (but enough to keep someone alive) You got a good point there. From some of the videos I've seen on SMG it looks like all the little planetoids Mario goes to are located above one really big planet. So the game dosen't take place in deep space. Mabey the mushroom world has alot more oxygen then Earth, so the air- no wait that woulndn't work. Never mind. I don't know.

The little planets can have atmosphere, and he's not that far from the big background planet.

Maybe Mario holds his breath between planets? But I guess being in space with no protective gear at all is dangerous no matter how short the period of time.

Maybe his star power protects him? Anyone who can be squished by a thwomp and live to tell about it may be resilient enough to fly through space for a short period of time

and he's not that far from the big background planet. Meaning he doesn't die of the vacuum of space. And since Mario dies when crushed by a thomp I suppose he's never been hit.

And since Mario dies when crushed by a thomp I suppose he's never been hit. I was thinking along the lines of SM64, where he just gets flattened.

Of course, whether he gets flattened or not is entirely up to the player, so in a perfect world (which I assume the "real" Mario operates in), he has never been flattened.
We should remember that these planets (or moons, maybe) are all extremely close together. Perhaps as soon as we leave the atmosphere of the first planet, we enter that of the second. I'm not really all that keen on cosmology, though, so this argument may carry no weight.

That makes sence. Only problem is: look at the size of our moon. It's pretty big, and yet it still dosen't have enough gravity to sustain it's own atmosphere. So how could a little tiny space rock do so?

Hey, that rock four Yoshis big that Raphael used as a battleground had Earth-like gravity.

It could be extremly dense. There's also those purple black hole looking portals that are shown for a split second in some of the vids. Somethings goin on there. But lets not argue about this, this is what we could do: WAIT FOR THE GAME TO COME OUT

Maybe we'll finally get a glimpse of Mushroom Earth's solar system. Let's just hope that the views of the planet from space show something different from our Earth. That would be inconvenient.

You know, I was just thinking, all those meateors so close to the planet seems kinda weird. Do you think the Mushroom planet has some sort of ring around it, sort of like Saturn? That would explain all those rocks aimlessly floting around. It doesn't have to be a really thik ring, it could be small like Jupiter's or Uranus. But it's still there.

They could have been placed there by some explosion caused by Bowser's krew.

Mars has those two small orbiting meteors, it could be the same with the PM2 moon and all the hundreds of floating objects.

In Super paper mario there is a scene where Mario is in space and has a helmet on. This makes me curious about ME's atmosphere

I guess we'll have to wait and see whether these games take place near Mushroom Earth or in different parts of the galaxy.

I'm guessing it is since you see goombas toads and chomps in the demo videos.
