I don't think an amusement park would be either underground or have uneven flooring.

Hazy maze cave is more likely a cave that miners filed out with mining stuff. I think Rainbow ride is the remains of a airship port.

On the walls is moss, and the orange plastic fencing to keep rubble from falling away. You'll notice similar fencing in the cave background for SMB in All Stars.

Yeah, I think Hazy Maze Cave was a mine where natural resources were mined. I just don't see much that would indicate it was ever an amusement park.

It has things that fit on an amusement park, though. Until Bowser came and flooded it with enemies and poisonous gas.

The Hazy Maze Cave does look more like a mine than anything else. Heck, it's even got lifts and poles!
Now all that's missing is one of those ghetto mine carts.

Well, mabey the entire level could have some roller coaster things going around the tunnels and stuff like that, but a cave-in must have happened or something to shut down the park.

And slightly off-topic, the music for that level was phenomenal.

I've been thinking about how real Bob-omb battlefield could really be...
Sky's all dark like in the movies, bullet bills and bob-ombs flying everywhere, more of that razor wire.
Now that would be a good place to hide some Power Stars. Especially if it was floating and the Bob-omb Buddies where cut off for reinforcements.

We saw that in Mario Party 1 (somewhat).

The courses are real and the portals are Warp Blocks from Super Mario 3D Land.

So, I'm reviving an old topic to put forth some theories for the painting locations while watching a Mario 64 speedrun the other day. The basic theme behind this is the assumption that they're real locations on the Mushroom Earth (or Plit, Amana, whatever you wanna call it).
Locations are Mushroom Kingdom, Mushroom Kingdom Territory (locations the crown has power over, but is largely unaffected by the MK ie Rogueport)m and Koopa Territory (Dark Land and assciated areas), or previously seen areas of the Mushroom World.
1) Bob-omb Battlefield: Mushroom Kingdom Territory
2) Whomp's Fortress: floating somewhere in the nearby sky, reused with minor tweaking by Bowser in SMG2
3) Jolly Roger Bay: Mushroom Kingdom, probably close by relatively speaking
4) Cool, Cool Mountain: Mushroom Kingdom
5) Big Boo's Haunt: Exactly as it appears, one enters by shrinking down magically
6) Hazy Maze Cave: Underneath the castle. I believe this because the Metal Cap Cavern, accessed through HMC, leads to the waterfall outside of the castle
7) Lethal Lava Land: Koopa Territory
8) Shifting Sand Land: Desert Land or Koopa Territory
9) Dire, Dire Docks: Mushroom Kingdom, close enough that Bowser's sub was there and had quick access to the castle
10) Snowman's Land: Mushroom Kingdom Territory
11) Wet-Dry World: The background of this level is too confusing for me to determine, but I think it could be anywhere underwater.
12) Tall, Tall Mountain: Mushroom Kingdom Territory
13) Tiny-Huge Island: Giant Land
14) Tick Tock Clock: Literally inside the castle's clock
15) Rainbow Ride: In the sky above Peach's castle
Thoughts?
