This is for theories of the first time the Bros got to the Mushroom World. In the arcade "Mario Bros" they followed some koopas and spinys into a warp pipe.
But lets add on to it and think about what happned before and after the encounter. Accourding to TMK "Mario Bros" came in '83 and "Super Mario Bros" in '85. Bowser invading the Mushroom Kingdom couldnt be the reason for the koopas in the sewers. I must be either accident or Bowser sent them to explore other areas.

But why would Bowser's troops be expanding the pipe system?
Unless they where good charecters like from Paper Mario.

I always had my own theroy about this. First off, I tend to base everything around the relese date of SMB (1985) so I belive MB really happened in 1985, the same day the Marios came to the mushroom kingdom (in 1985). Remember how Kamek had a dream the 2 brothers would be born that would bring ruin to the Koopa Klan? Perhaps using minions to guard the warp pipes laeding to the real world the day of the koopas invasion of TMK was a precaution against letting anyone (specificly the Mario Bros.) from coming back to the Mushroom World.

Could've been on a search misson. By locating the brothers, they could avoid spending resources on places where they aren't.

Impossible, Bowser doesn't know where the Bros live. That search would have to be in every warp pipe accessible sewer on the planet. And they would have no idea if the Bros would even be in the sewers because the Koopas didnt know the Bros are plumbers. And that search wouldnt go onto the streets for obvious reasons.

We don't know how many pipes there are leading to the real world. There could be hundreds, there could be just a few. Besides, it's not excatly like there were a ton of enemies down in the sewer. He could have just sent a few to each one.

It didn't say if Kamek invisioned them as being plumbers, and for all we know the Bros could have started plumbing a week before the encounter.

He didn't need to know they were plumbers, he just wanted to guard all the warp pipes. The fact that the one the brothers came through was in a sewer was just a couincidence

Bowser or Kamek must've had control of the portal in the warp pipe because the Mario bros. would've used it to get back home if it had still been there. That's why I'm thinking the Koopas' presence in the sewers was no coincidence.

So wouldn't that mean there would need to be gaurds at the warp pipes since the Bros came to earth, in case they ever came back?

We don't know who exactly knew of these pipes or there location. They may have been forgotten about, due to there lack of use.

It could have been a malfunction. They wanted to go somewhere to check up on things but got re-routed because of construction or a leak or something.

Or bowser wanted to gaurd the only way of transport to TMK which would be the warp pipes. Bowser and his gang have shown intelligance every now and then. Plus their like every where so they must know a few things. and finaly they have magikoopas which could have used their magic to find out the info needed

If the magikoopas could have discovered where the bros were they probably would have attacked before then.

Why would they attack the Bros. outside of the MK? They might do things such as attract police attention.
