Or maybe the wings are stored in the Yoshi's body, and when the Yoshi eats a blue shell a certain substance finds its way to the wings and causes them to shoot out.

They grow from chemicals. Complete with feathers, nerves, and four designer colors. As I said before, I think that might actually be harmful to the yoshi. After all, imagine if you were to suddenly sprout wings on your back. The growth of the new bone alone would probably shred your existing muscle tissue in the area, not to mention do (possibly) irreversible damage to your nervous system. I'm pretty sure that if the changes are biological then they must have already been there.

Wait wait wait, I'm forgetting a single detail. In SMW there was a block you could hit that would expel a pair of wings that you could grab out of thin air. That pretty much proves that the wings are magical and not biological.

Oh yeah.
Well, here's one:
When those magical wings come in contact with a Yoshi they melt into his skin and reappear on his back, with nerves and muscle and stuff that form onto the back.

Possible. But the fact that they're magical in nature pretty much negates the need for any biological explanations.

In much deeper thinking I thought this?
Where the fudge do those magic wings come from anyway? Why are they even there?
Emergency Yoshi use probably.

Since Yoshi clearly has no ears do you think his nostrils could be used as ears too? Like our mouth is for eating and breathing.

They probably have internal ears like birds, lizards, amphibians and dinosaurs

Yeah, seeing as how they're obviously reptilian their ears probably just don't have shells like ours.

Well, in SSBM Yoshi can perform a move in which he eats another character, and a crunching sound is heard.

What? All I hear is his high pitched "bow" sound.

Claws is talking about the damage-while-grabbing move, Chew.
EDIT: Also, what do you think the average Yoshi lifespan is? I'd say they live for quite a while, maybe even 100 years or so.
