Or if everything was on the floor in levels there wouldn't be much platforming

That's a bad explanation, we're thinking scientific here

true but that doesn't make it not hard

Which is why we do it, because it's hard. A human instinct I guess.

If something isn't hard, it isn't worth fighting for.

Well, Toomai already has his theory for floating stuff so there's not much to talk about.

I'd say Coins don't really Float, they are just lying on the Ground, but how stupid would it be if you couldn't see the Coins in 2D Games, and they would have to make an animation of him bending over to pick them Up!

That does make since, and Luigi's Mansion at least shows that there are at least some coins that don't float, but there are a lot of places in both 3D and 2D Mario games where coins just sit high up in the air away from the ground.

True, but I don't think that has anything to do with the Coins themselves, in games like 64 and Galaxy, it could be a Side-effect from Bowser making the Land float. I mean, if you can lift a Castle into Space and cary it to the Center of the Universe, floating Coins is Childs-play. But for the other Games, I'd say it's either an excess amount of Magic in said area, that weakens the Pull of Gravity. Not enough that, say, a Human would notice the Change, but light objects like Coins would Drift into the Air. Also, POW Blocks cause them to fall, so I'd imagine the Shockwave could cause a Disturbance that would allow Gravity to do its Thing, while the Magic recovered(Probably taking no more than a Few Minutes). Just a Theory, though.

Yeah, but coins float - and by that I mean there are coins more than one block away from the ground - in many other Mario games, including those whose plot doesn't revolve around Bowser's magic. Oh, and Wario games. And Yoshi games. And floating bananas in DK games...
There's one interesting thing about coins, though... the ones that are normally in the level float and just keep on floating until someone collects them, but if an enemy drops coins - like after being killed with a Fire Flower in SMW - they don't float and quickly disappear. This is true of all games where enemies drop coins; those never float and always disappear quickly. Why?

If you don't have to Jump to reach it, then it's not really Floating. And I doubt they are actually as Large as the Game depicts them. Probably the Size they are in Luigi's Mansion. And the Magic Theory could still be applied to the Floating Bannanas in DKC and Floating Coins in Wario Land. Assumin they take place in the same World.

Yeah, coins are probably only appearing that large in order for us to see them properly at any distance, but I'm still curious about why coins basically are subdivided into a) ones that stay in place and never vanish and b) ones that jump out of enemies (or Mario in PM games) and very quickly vanish.

It's possible that they get Burried... But that Theory is just me Being Lazy...

We should wonder why there are coins everywhere first. We may assume they float because they got exposed to the same ray that the one that allows blocks to float (as you can see in the Woohoo University) but why'd there be coins everywhere ?

There's a room in the Woohoo University where you see unfinished blocks. The only things you can see is that inside a block there's a lock and two gearings, while another block is being held in the air by a ray (supposedly an anti-gravity laser). Coins float the same way as blocks do, so it's possible it's for the same reason. Why there are coins everywhere is beyond me though. You may notice how there are no randomly placed coins in other dimensions though. Maybe that it's part of a system made by the MK's political authorities to avoid people being poor ?
