Some of those pipes could be part of an old irregation system. That would explain why there are so manny in desert areas.

Sorry for bumping this topic but I just thought of a theory for warp pipes..
Natural warp pipes are extremely rare and fixed and will always take you to the same place and back.
Warp pipes can, however, be created with wands taking the user to wherever he/she wants but the pipe will dissapear as soon as the user enters the pipe while natural ones stay.

I don't know...it seems relatively easy to excavate a short pipe (see SPM), and "pre-made" pipes are both common and everywhere.
And bumping's okay, because we don't need a second topic on the same subject.

My only question is....Why do the pipes make that sound when go through them....and why is there a "blooming" sound when ever an item pops out of a block? :/

Sliding against the pipe or block.

My only question is....Why do the pipes make that sound when go through them....and why is there a "blooming" sound when ever an item pops out of a block? :/ Thats just an in-game thing like in the Sonic games or any other game. Have you noticed the sound for going through pipes is the same sound when Super Mario gets hit by an enemy and turns to small Mario. All the sound effects are just in-game.

It's similar, but it's not the same.

I think Clive Koopa is right and the warp pipe sound is just a random side affect

The warp pipe sound effect is the same sound as when Super Mario gets hit by an enemy and turns into small Mario

So it is just a sound effect then

It depends on the game. Sometimes it's different and other times it's not.

But it is still a sound affect in all of the games

Anyway enough about sound effects, lets stay on topic please.
Warp pipes are linked with the Pipe Maze and contains lots of rooms underground some artifically created for secret meetings and also can transport you to another part of the Mushroom/Koopa Kingdom instantaneously in seconds even if its hundreds of miles away. Don't ask me how or why, thats just how I've always thought it to be that way.

Well, wasn't that the purpose that warp pipes were created for

Well yes, I just added the secret rooms bit and that you can create warp pipes to specifically take you to a certain location.
