Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about.

Warp pipes seem to posses the same ability as piranha plants, that they are able to come out of the ground and go back in without leaving any marks on the ground. I always theorized that warp pipe were a sort of plant like...thing being able to "grow" as in the beginning of SM64 and a level or two in SMW where they seem to move up and down, and the fact that one day they're not there, the next they are like the pipes in Paper Mario.

The metal orange squares where only used in Paper Mario. Those are possibly the permanent ones that can't go back in the ground.

Shron, I was wondering about SM64DS's beginning myself. Here's what I concluded about the portable warp pipe. The traveller programs where he wants the pipe to take him and then carries the small section of pipe around with him. When he finds a suitable spot to place it, he sticks it into the ground. The pipe then rapidly extends, burrowing its way through the ground to its location. The user simply hops in and is transported to his destination, after which the pipe shrinks back to its normal size and ejects itself from the ground.

But we don't see anything like that happen in the intro.

Maybe the pipe waits underground for its user to return?

Kinda like a fast growing plant? It is planted and then burrows somewhere? Hey, Maybe warp pipes are living... But probably not.

I like to think of it as a spell of some sort. "Summon Warp Pipe" or something.

I like to think that when you yell "PIPE!" one appears, but I like comedy.

But we don't see anything like that happen in the intro. Hmm. Guess you're right. Maybe, like Toomai said, the pipe only emerges from the ground when the user is getting ready to exit the warp pipe. Then, as soon as the user is ejected, the pipe descends back into the ground and enters standby. When the user is ready to return to the place from which he came, he can somehow notify the warp pipe, causing it to sprout up again.

There's probably a remote control to activate the pipe again.
By remote control I mean a magical object like "the rock" from the movie.

Considering it's a pipe, I think it would use some sort of near by valve to mak it appear. Or on of those "!" buttons from Paper Mario.

Maybe there are sensors in the pipe that cause the pipe to appear when there's movement nearby.

They probably crawl into stationary pipes that have fallen into disuse.

In SMW, some pipes can be gone through even though they have a piranah plant living inside them. Also, some pipes you can't go through at all. Magical barrier? Clogged?
