This glitch has happened twice for me, so it's not a one-off.
On Peach Gardens, a compie may get a Bullet Bill and use it so it travels the shortcut of going through the first patch of flowers. However, once reverted, that compie will drive backwards. They will get stuck in the (according to the full map) northwest corner of the rectangular area just before the Chomp maze. After a few seconds, Lakitu will pick them up and drop them as if they landed in the lake earlier on.
