Is Captain Toad THE Toad?

I used to say no, but with the advent of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, I feel that I might change my mind. In that game, he knows Toadette. And he does demonstrate that he can adventure on his own when necessary. Would that be enough evidence to confirm that Captain Toad is the same Toad in the Mario Kart/multiplayer series?

Seems like enough evidence! It seems plausible enough, and acknowledging them as the same helps the character stand out mythos-wise.

I'd be 100% behind this theory iiiiif not for 3D World. It makes sense for Captain Toad to be The Toad since he's been depicted as a leader and whatnot. But on the other hand, the Blue Toad that accompanies Mario and Luigi and Peach is explicitly referred to as "Toad," and doesn't it make sense that The Toad is the one to go on the adventure? It's a bit messy.

Oh man, I haven't played 3D World so I didn't know that. Maybe that's just a nickname? Seems like they should've used the red-capped one so we could be consistent...

I think they changed his spots to blue to more easily differentiate him from Mario and Peach in multiplayer. Or something? I guess they didn't care about wreaking havoc on Toad's individuality, heh. Hurray for more questions!

Maybe they just called him that because it's also the species name? Kind of like that running joke in the first Paper Mario where all the toads seemingly had the same last name.

Koichi Hayashida would like to see Captain Toad in Mario Kart. My first reaction was "I guess this means he's a separate character from Toad," but then I remembered Baby Mario, Metal Mario, and Tanooki Mario...
