So, I'm replaying SMG (in French), but as a Mariologist, I can't help but analyze everything.
So, there.
First, a "galaxy" can be anything according to what the game shows, from a planet and its moons, to a star, to a bunch of space debris. Actually, an actual galaxy is called a "great galaxy" here. So, different meanings than what we usually use.
So every dome on the Observatory can "observate" a list of "galaxies". However, the game shows the galaxy selection screen as an extrasolar system, so I'd assume every galaxy is actually a planet / dwarf planet orbiting a star (shown as the Observatory on the screen for design purposes).
Note that NONE of the solar systems we see are Mario's, as Mario's homeworld (the Grand Finale Galaxy) isn't available from any dome.
Hungry Lumas galaxies are possibly part of the related dome's solar system too, and will be considered as such here.
"Planets" that look like they have stuff from somewhere else were likely ripped away from their homeplace by a meteor or something.
Before I start off, a few details:
The Comet Observatory is shown over Mario's planet. However, the Grand Finale Galaxy is not going in the blue planet's direction. That's simply because, after the end of the game, the Observatory is far away from Mario's world obviously. They either didn't bother changing the background, or the Observatory just went stationnary above another planet.
And, here are how things go:
- main game, except Mario recovers all 120 stars before saving Peach, and Rosalina tells him the Observatory can access to another world, but they should save Peach first. However, the ending was unexpected, and as such Mario returned to his home planet.
- But not long after the ending, he is taken back to the Observatory (which is now far away from Mario's planet) and to another world, in which there are 2 Luigis - one with a personality closer to Mario's - with only one being Mario's brother. He incarnates the most courageous one here (who also happens to have a romantical interest in Peach, who doesn't share it back though, and who also happens to be a major threat to Bowser like Mario is) and relives the events of the game in another world basically.
- After that, he is taken back to his own world, and is launched back to his homeplanet. Soon after, the Obseratory goes near the planet again, and the Star Festival is re-celebrated (as Bowser ruined it the first time). There are also 100 Purple Coins spread around Toad Town, creating a Power Star in the end.
- SMG2 starts the next day.
just to make things clear.
Finally, the background planets. Many galaxies share the same backgrounds, mainly two "planet" backgrounds: a blue planet, and a green one. Both host life and are Earth-like, just to make things clear. It doesn't mean they're the same planets - in the case of the "blue planet", they weren't going to make different continents for every single galaxy that uses it.
And NOW I'll start analyzing each galaxy.
EXTRASOLAR SYSTEM 1 (Terrace)
- Good Egg Galaxy: Closest to its star. A bunch of stuff orbiting a planet that hosts life, during nighttime. Nothing special. As for Dino Piranha's planet, it's a minion of Bowser, so the egg was probably put there. Also, a couple Toads ended up there, because they were separaed from other Toads.
- Honeyhive Galaxy: A dwarf planet (that is more like a chunk of earth that was ripped off a bigger planet at some point) orbited by stuff, including the Honey Queen's castle.
- Loopdeeloop Galaxy: A single, half-tube shaped ocean orbited by some platforms. Can't really call it a dwarf planet, it doesn't even have a core. Note that it's surrounded by a large atmosphere and clouds. Penguins from Beach Bowl Galaxy go there to do ray surfing (note: they are seen in several different galaxies, so it's possible they have a space vessel).
- Flipswitch Galaxy: Just a big, unfinished cube with switches and some giant blocks nearby. Its core is a little black hole, providing gravity to the dwarf planet. Strangely enough, the atmosphere shows imagery of the Mushroom Kingdom...
- Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor: A small robot plant orbiting a planet that hosts life, at night. Just two artifical moons.
- Sweet Sweet Galaxy: A giant bakery factory orbiting a planet that hosts life, at daytime.
So basically three planets that all host life (and as such must not be far away from each other), but with enough space for three (two ?) dwarf planets in between the first and second one.
EXTRASOLAR SYSTEM 2 (Fountain)
- Space Junk Galaxy: A bunch of space debris and space dust orbiting a small swarf planet (that is actually the home of a giant spider, and gravity doesn't work right at all either (maybe the spider destroyed the core ?).
- Battlerock Galaxy: A mechanized chunk of rock orbiting a brown planet that possibly used to host life (many continents are distinguished) but something happened and all life on that planet was gone - the land is nothing but rock, there isn't any ocean left, and the sky is red. The "battlerock" is probably a chunk of rock from the planet that was sent into orbit by a meteor, and that the Koopa troop took over.
- Rolling Green Galaxy: A bunch of platforms (reminescent of golf) orbiting a planet that hosts life, at day. If these platforms were originally on that planet (as they have features that point at it being artifical, like the very fact it's a bunch of constructions anyway) then the life on that planet must be advanced enough.
- Hurry-Scurry Galaxy: Just a little moon made out of disappearing platforms, with a black hole at its core that provides gravity on it. It's orbiting a planet that hosts life, during night.
- Bowser's Star Reactor: A star-making plant created by Bowser, orbiting a red gas giant.
- Sling Pod Galaxy: A bunch of asteroids with sling pods on them, possibly originating from Space Junk Galaxy.
