I'm hoping that they're going to offer some sort of explanation of this or that that is just a beta and they are planning on giving him the full Tanooki suit. Considering that they JUST MADE A GAME with ONLY the Tanooki suit means that they'll at least remember that beinging back Super Leaves all of a sudden would make no sense.

Mario having a full-body Tanooki Suit whenever he grabbed a Super Leaf in 3D Land could have just been a design thing for practicality - i.e., being able to easily distinguish him from standard Mario in a 3D setting. You know, kind of like how Small Mario lost his hat; even though that had never happened before, they made him lose his hat so you could easily tell he's Small and not normal-sized.
Since NSMB2 is a 2D game, neither of these things are necessary. (Although, that's kind of a shame in Small Mario's case - I really like the idea of him losing his hat and becoming weaker.)

What I would hope for that is realistic, is that they implement the Tanooki Leaf instead of bringing back the Super Leaf. Stay consistent Nintendo! What I would really want would be for them to scrap the Tanooki Leaf all together (along with any uniquely SMB3 elements) in favor of the grand return of the Cape Feather (along with other Super Mario World elements)! Super Mario World, in my opinion, is the superior of the two games yet it so often gets overshadowed by Super Mario Bros. 3! The Cape Feather looked AND played better than the Tanooki Leaf (or rather, Raccoon Leaf, in the original), and I loved the Checkpoints/Goals in Super Mario World.
